Small Garages Or Small Workshops Thread

Nice. I love simple guitars and yours turned out really nice. Most people's early builds have a really botched up finish, yours looks great. I didn't know Warmoth made a neck with a headstock like that. Did you have any trouble getting the floyd setup and intonated? Sometimes they are tricky.

I built a hollow body Les Paul recently using acoustic guitar type construction. I bent the sides and used perfling to bind it all together. It was a really popular build on the forums. Looks like this inside

heh. not my house. even if the downstairs toilet was the first toilet installed in the house. outhouse prior to indoor. circa the 50s. the 1850s.

but, in general, yes, the toilet markings are a sneaky good way to date a house.

as for garages, mine is less than a year old, so still in progress. clear span, 24x20, 8' ceiling. single 8.5' sliding barn door on right side. enough room to store my jeep, and a place for my wife to park her car.

it does. it's on the outside, on the back wall. you can just see the bottom step and railing in the third pic.

 

Did some cleaning and organizing in the garage shop today. Got my cabinets moved around and cleaned out, organized and labeled the drawers.

 

Nothing exciting with my garage except that both Jeeps are parked inside this evening. That is a rarity here.

I’ll be starting construction this year on my own small garage this year once I get things in order. The problem I’m running into is that I’m limited to going up to 90% of the primary structure on the property. See, my house is a massive 478 sq ft! That works out to about 430 that I can work with.

Go to your planning dept. and see about getting a variance for more square footage, If you get along with your neighbors they will sign off on it. Then there will be the formality of a public hearing. It happens a lot, well worth a shot.

 

I knew a person who connected the shop and house with a coverered walkway, to get his permit. This satisfied the apparachiks that it was all one building legally.

 

Even your dream shop won't be your dream shop after it's done and you're moved in. You'll always want more; it's human nature. Go for what you can when you can.

An analogy: My dad is still waiting for that perfect sale on his ideal air compressor, as he has been for 30 years. Meanwhile, he'd have an easier time filling up his tires with a pair of bellows.

Suffering without is worse than dealing with less-than-perfect.

 

I built my shop BEFORE I built my house, that worked out pretty good .

 

I have seen places where they built the garage first and lived in the space while the main house was built. This works well if you want to put a room above the garage that can become an apartment or office after the main house is built.

 

I had a meeting with planning and zoning yesterday. Their “hard and fast rule” of 90% apparently isn’t negotiable. My last shop was a 14x28 stall and it worked only because of my 24x36 cold storage garage. This time around I don’t have near the vehicles I had. I think I’m okay with small as long as the layout works. I’m currently working on sketching 16x26 with a 10x26 lean to.

 

Plus you'd have a toilet really available in your shop.
