    Success!

My son came over today and we spent the better part of the day pulling the transmission. It was great father & son time.

I'm so excited that this is the issue...$56 at my local FLAPS for a new one.

Yeah. it's funny how many online look the same.

My son and I were covered from head to toe in grease and grime. The plan is to get the new flexplate and install this week.

Funny how exciting it is to have a broken auto part...Who wishes for that...Right? o_O

    Beats an engine rebuild.

You should send a pic to the PO.
He'll cry when he finds out the engine is fine.:p

Okay but I'm still wondering - what about those pieces of broken distributor gear, etc?

    Me too.

First is to replace the flexplate and tranny, then investigate what would have caused that. I can't see any damage to the distributor gears currently in the motor. (y)

When I inspected the oil, there were no flakes in it. It must have broken off and the PO was too lazy to drop the pan? I suspect they've been in there for a while.

"I suspect they've been in there for a while."

    Likely.
Friend of mine was changing oil in his Mack truck, stuck his finger into the drain and found a ⅜ nut. Drove him crazy wondering...

I agree, that's the most likely scenario.

Other than the labor involved the price is right. Amazing how much noise those flexplates make

Most of my findings say it's fine. It's on the back burner for now.

O'Reilly sells an "unbalanced" flexplate...Is that because the engine is internally balanced? At least that's what a co-worker is telling me.

Fine? That video I saw showed it to be very loose.

I made it cross country sans-tensioner in a dauntless. :D
