    So much for optimism...

    It's not the chain.

I had my daughter cycle the key a few times. The serpentine belt is still off.

I'd pull the plugs to take compression out of the equation and grab the crank bolt with a breaker bar. Rock it back and forth rapidly to see if you can pinpoint the noise.

? Explain................................................I would be looking at that timing chain and timing gears.......something had to break inside there to sheer off that distributor gear, if there plastic ya might be missing a tooth or two........and feeler gauge that side clearance in those rods to see which group is the bad one and pull that cap...........but reverse the torque first so you know if it was tight.

Assuming the engine would run...what was/is your plan for the XJ. Is it for the daughter to have and DD? Is it Dads new toy? A huge rock crawler build financed from forcing your kids to work and give pay to you. Mostly I ask as thinking about what is the next step. Obviously, many of us want to know more about what is going on with so are encouraging you to dig in farther. I agree with Tarry - the destruction of that dist. gear suggests some other stuff is probably going on in the timing gear/chain area.

But...A cheap CL or JY 4.0 could easily be dropped in and all is good - simple fix for a few hundred bucks (maybe a bit more). Of course, if its a DD for daughter, you might not feel all that comfortable with a questionable engine. If its for you, drop in a cheap replacement and drive it till dies. Heck, you could then spend your free time pulling apart the knocking 4.0 and figure out what is wrong. You might even get it fixed in time to swap it back into the XJ when the $300 CL engine blows up.

A toy, occasional drive to work and rarely allowing the daughter to take to ice cream or Red Box run. She has a practical Civic that I picked a couple of months ago.

I used to have an 84 Cherokee with a 4 cylinder. I bought from the salvage yard in 93 after it had been crunched in the rear end. I pulled it out straight and replaced the fuel tank, it was a very dependable, fun vehicle. Only reason I got rid of it was it wouldn't pull my boat more than 60 mph, they raised the limit to 75. I wish I had another, my son is 15 and eyeing my 4runner.

I think your daughter will love that one when you get running right. I'm pulling for you!
