1974 Fuel Line Routing

I am new to this site and I'm rebuilding a 74 cj5 with a 304. I'm looking for a picture of the fuel line routing. I have the original fuel line but can't remember/figure out how it routes (It was several years ago when I tore it down and wasn't smart enough to take a picture). So far I haven't been able to find a picture on the web. Thanks

 

You mean the fuel line on the engine, or on the chassis? The chassis line goes back to the fuel tank in the driver's side frame channel. From the frame, there are short pieces of fuel hose that go from the steel line to the fuel tank and the fuel pump. From the fuel pump, the steel line goes up to the engine.

There is a change in the fuel pump 1974 to 1975, where the fuel pump ports pointing up then point down. If you have the wrong fuel pump, the fuel line won't make any sense. Also 1974 to 1975, the fuel return line was added. This also changes the plumbing, with the addition of a steel line between the frame and the fuel pump.

Thanks timgr. My specific problem is the exact routing of the steel line from tank to pump. I know it is somehow along the driver side rail, but what I can't figure out are details like, should it run along the top of the frame or inside? What the u-shaped bend in the line is supposed to be going around exactly. Details like that. Also, I ordered a new tank and sending unit and the new sending unit has a stem for a return line. You're right that it didn't originally have one. From reading other comments I'm thinking I'll run a return although maybe overkill. BTW, the line from pump to carb is still attached so that will be easy to copy and replace. Thanks again for your help!

 

Having received my '74 with no fuel line in place, I'm at the same disadvantage. The Jeep is very much a Frankenstein, so I'm not concerned about matching OEM as much as I want it to be safe & reliable. How is the fuel line secured to the frame channel?

Metal clips like a brake line. I looked at the parts book and there is no picture showing the fuel lines other than a detail showing the fuel pump and lines under the hood. I would use the clamps like Jeff points to above - you can also get plain steel clamps of many types from McMaster-Carr, such as these McMaster-Carr The factory used double clamps like this to route the fuel feed and return line beside each other in the frame rail. These Jeeps have an open C for most of the frame length, and I believe both the brake line and fuel lines run to the back inside the frame rail, as I mentioned above. I would use 5/16" steel brake line for the feed and 1/4" steel brake line for the return - those are the sizes the factory used. This material is cheap in coils from eBay and other online locations.

 

Note that '75 and newer is completely different. Not shown in this drawing is a barbed fitting (?) on the fuel pump going to a short piece of rubber hose that bridges to the steel feed line running along the chassis rail.

 

Thank you both. It'll be another couple of weeks before I'm able to tackle it, but this helps. I have the no-return line setup pictured above (I've been running from a gas can for testing). I have a new tank, sending unit, and coil of 5/16 line ready to go.

 

After your new , shiny plumbing is done.... spray the lines with Fluid- Film. Do it once or twice a year . They will never rust out , in your Lifetime !

I used rubber insulated stainless steel P-clamps mounted to top of driver's side frame rail with stainless hex head screws. I ran parallel with rear brake lines by doubling the P-clamps on one screw.

 

Stainless and nylock nuts are the way to go.

 

Mine is a 75 (and a CJ6) but maybe some of these will help if you can zoom in enough.

 

I am rebuilding a 1974 CJ 5 and was wondering if anybody has come up with better information on the routing of the fuel lines.

 

How better? I can see the fuel lines on the frame rail in the pictures above. The green nylon tubing is for vapor recovery.

 

Hey Guy... Since you're rebuilding a '74 and lack some pics. You may find my build useful. Follow the link in my sig to the build of my '74 here. I took tons of pics. Posted many of them here. Fessers is a really good routing bit different from mine. I have some of mine before restoration too that I used to piece things back they way there were. I had to modify slightly because I used In Line Tube pre-bent SS lines. They weren't the best compared to factory and in hindsight should have just ran my own and flared everything from scratch.

What does the vapor return line attach to under the hood? I have it on my 75 but it just end by the firewall.
