Body Mount Question...

Doing some of the body work on my 68 CJ5 tub and had a question about the front-most mounts on either side of the tunnel. Anyone have a good picture or idea of what these are supposed to look like?

Mine are kind of beat up, bent and the driver side has a block of wood stuffed in it. I know some of the early flat fenders used wood for various applications, but pretty sure they had better ideas by 1968.

Here is the area in question. There are no bolt holes, just a rectangular channel sitting (and rubbing on) the frame.

    Resulting frame rubbing/wear

Likely supposed to be a rubber pad of some kind there, just not sure what kind or what holds it in place?

    Thanks

That wood block is stock from the factory. Kaiser apparently saw no reason to change the way Willys did it. There was a thin reenforced rubber pad that may have been "stapled" with a super heavy staple to hold it to the metal casing the block of wood. Contact cement is what I used years later to keep the rubber mount in place.

Thank you Donny. Interesting about the wood blocks.

Sounds good, I will straighten things out, put a thin (1/8" or so) piece of reinforced rubber between frame and channel, affix with contact cement, then conjure up something a little less organic in place of the wood to support the channel.

    Thanks again.

You'll also find wood inside the hat channels under the floor board and tire mount channel...Most likely rotted.

I welded a stud, cut off bolt, to the body and put a urethane body mount there. seems to work. Something to consider anyway.

I used pressure treated wood cut to size to go into the hat channel on mine. Also replaced the rubber pads with a piece of a warn out belt from a convenor in a crushed stone place, the side does not ware out so you get a good 3/8" piece out of it, cut them on a band saw.

Good call on the conveyor belt. I had a slick BMX-type tire from my son's bike in my "this may come in handy later" bin I thought about using, but it ended up a little thinner than I thought I might need. Quite a bit of work to do yet before I am ready to mount the tub, but I do have the Energy Suspension urethane body mount kit in hand, so I will straighten everything up on the tub mounts, fill/reinforce them with something suitable (wood/etc.) then see what the right thickness of rubber makes sense for the gap there once the tub is test fitted.

Just talked to the guy who maintains the conveyor at work, he's gonna save a chunk for me.

    Thanks
