Looking at a Ramsey PTO,winch that says model 246R-601. What is the difference between that model and the 200 that I seem to see talked about?

This is something I am confused about and need to learn ore about. Front and rear applications and their identification/number and the top and bottom wind and THEIR identification/numbers.

I picked up this winch and it did come with the fairlead and a frame but I don't think it's a CJ5 frame. I've been searching all day (between bowl games) for any sort of clear pic or drawing of the original CJ5 frame with no luck. Seems like hundreds of pics I've scrolled thru. Does anyone have anything that might help?

From pics I've seen, it appears that either the fairlead sits on top of the bumper, bolts thru the bumper to the winch frame, OR it sits on a piece of angle iron slightly above the bumper. Then, I'm guessing the sides simply boxes out at the inside of the frame rails on each side and bolts to the frame there. Not sure if I can adapt this existing winch frame or best to just start over. Any help would be appreciated. I do plan to call Ramsey next week and just see if they might have any historical info on the frame.

Try a search, there was a lot of discussion on this a few years back.

Howard, I really appreciate this. I'm up in the mountain at our cabin and Willie is back at home in Texas for now, so I can't go out and check measurements, but studying the drawings, the front and rear make sense. However, I'm not catching the side one (passenger) to fully understand how it attaches to the front and rear pieces. Does it weld to each, I'm guessing? And does it sit flush with the top, bottom, or somewhere in between ?

The side pieces bolt to the frame horns & the the front & back (with the winch bolted into them) sit on top of the sides & get bolted to them.

Looking at the diagram I posted I notice it's actually for a "high mount" design, the one I built is the "low mount" version-

Here's the original photo's Seth (windyhill) supplied to me (low mount)-

Here's how mine finished up like-

Note that I went with a full width angle on the back piece (vs. 5/8") & I used two bolts at the rear corners instead of one.

I'd suggest not drilling the winch holes until you can mock up everything in place & verify drive shaft/bellcrank clearance- mine clears by, at best, 1/8", YMMV.

Take your time on the welds & do them right- nasty things may happen otherwise.

Howard, couple more questions. The bolt holding the fairlead on, does it go thru the bumper too? And second, this high and low option was for what reason one vs the other. Again this was the Ramsey original? Or just what others came up with?

In studying your pic I see you have a tension strap on the handle. Is that to keep it from accidentally slipping to engage? Which got me thinking, can someone accidentally knock the PTO shifter to engage?

I can see there is some learning to do here?

On mine there's about 1/8" between the mount & bumper. The fair lead bolts only go through the mount but I did drill holes in the bumper to clearance the heads. I'm not sure it would be practical to put them through the bumper- once the mount is in it' would be practically impossible to get them in there.

The tension strap is simply insurance , more for curious fingers than anything else. I assume when I'm away from the jeep people are Going to Touch. I don't think the lever would ever move on it's own, neither the PTO shifter (which is extremely reluctant to engage when the the engine is'nt turning anyhow) but a little insurance goes a long.

Plus it looks REALLY neat. :)

Howard, you mentioned high mount vs low mount. Why one vs the other? Also you said you went with full width angle on the rear instead of 5/8. So you did 2 1/2" by ????

Here's my Ramsey 200 in action from this past weekend. It is really slow, but will pull you up a tree.

I don't have much info on them other than a picture someplace of a CJ5 with a winch sitting up a lot higher.
The high mount seems to have been used for crankshaft driven winches, some where's I've seen a pic of a chain drive unit used to get power to the winch.

My main interest in making that plan was to get the winch high enough to get the drive shaft up above the bellcrank arm; I may have a shot at doing that way as the drive shaft & my front axle aren't getting along together at all well. :(

They go a lot faster in 3rd & the throttle knob pulled all the way out :)

Howard, I made my driveshaft come up the passenger side. I took the winch apart and swapped it around. Much nicer of a run with no lack of room.

You do need to have an OD for it to work and modify the body.
