Ross Steering Box

1967 cj5... I have the Ross steering box on my jeep. Bought the Tightsteer thinget from walcks4wd, seemed to take a lot of play out of the steering, have a few other things that will need replaced. But my question is, on the side/bottom of the box towards the front of the jeep, there is a circle thing there that keeps coming out of the box, it has a rod or something attached to it. It won't come all the way out due to the brake lines there, but I can't figure out why this piece won't stay in place. Can anyone help?

 

Are you talking about the tube that the horn wire goes through?

 

It's possible, it's a circle disc thing with a tube sticking out of it... has a hole in the end... my jeep didn't have a horn when I bought it so there is no wire going through

 

I can snap a picture tomorrow and post it, if that would help.

 

Yup, that's what it is.... the tube sticking out lets the horn wire go through the steering box from the steering column.



In the pic, you can see where the wire would go inside the worm gear and come out the other side of the steering box.

 

Sounds like the horn wire tube. The "circle thing" should be a press fit in to the housing. If it won't stay in I would use JB weld for a quick fix. Your steering box should have lube in it. Did it leak out?

Here is mine from when I rebuilt it a couple of years back. You can see the JB weld job. It worked great.

A word to the wise, my cj had lots of play also, I was concerned so i pulled it apart. An nearly fell over when I saw the parts that fit into the worm gear!!!they had worn down to about the size of a 20 penny nail!!>>>>>>>>>Just saying<<<<<<<

 

At some point someone filled this steering box with grease, I assume possibly because of that horn wire thing coming out.

Army grunt: can you please elaborate, as I plan to rebuild my Ross box this winter (cj5, f4). What was worn to nail size? The two nubs on the sector shaft? If so, was that the only cause of the play? How about play from worn sector shaft bushings? Did you replace those? I was under assumption that those were the main cause of Ross box play.

 

I did that too, but have been shown that this is not a good fix and was not what the steering box was designed to use. I fixed it with a saginaw power steering upgrade.

 

Mine is good now, I replaced the sector shaft(it comes with new brass bushings)I took it to a local shop. they pressed out the old ones an replaced the new ones, then polished the new ones so the shaft was a perfect fit!!it costed me a box of donuts
I see where lots of guys change to other boxes, an it worked good for them. I chose to stick with what came with the Jeep.
What does your sector shaft look like?If it doesn't look worn it might be a simple adjustment with the adjusting screw.
