My search didn't show much here (one military Jeep SSO) but I wondered if there has been any recent discoveries on Special Sales Order numbers in the Kaiser and early AMC era? I am researching some numbers gleaned from the M-Series FC trucks and I know there were a few different ones on Renegades and other SSO Jeeps. I have feelers out in a lot of places now but want to collect as many SSO number as I can, assign them to a particular vehicle (e.g. for a 1970 Renegade 1 vs a Renegade II) and then if my research yields anything, I will have a small database. There may still be records of what was included in those SSOs and that could be a boon to Renegade owners wanting to know all the details.

I have a picture of a SSO plate that I took on this site and it was a Mint Green 70 Rene I with SSO D-5090.

I wonder if the Renegade I SSOs were different according to color? How long ago did you post the image? That will help me to find it based on your handle. Unless you have it bookmarked..? Thanks!

Thanks much! Was that a CJ-5 Tux or a CJ-6 Tux?

Got it, thanks. I added it to the list. A short list so far but you helped it grow.

There is a 71 Rene II on Craigslist in Austin Texas with a pic of the SSO on the firewall.

Yep! Which is why "cataloging" has to be done the hard way today but collecting the numbers.

An AMC parts man back in the late 1970's told me the Special Order Numbers for the early Renegades was because of a heavy duty frame that was used for that model. A friend had what I guess to be a Ren ll because it had no tailgate. I was trying to pick up parts for him, and had the VIN from the dash as well as the SSO from the firewall. Anybody else have any info that can verify?

SSO was used if there was a low volume build that required paint, parts or assembly outside the assembly line norm. Only in a few rare cases do we have exact knowledge of what was on the BOMs for the various SSO specials. I don't know that the heavy frame was on the list for the Renegade but I also don't know that it wasn't. I do know the lack of a tailgate was one of the elements that put Renegades onto the SSO list. The special colors was another.
