Wiring Tow Lights

Those Hopkins Diodes are perfect. And inexpensive. And they'll be at my house tomorrow. Thanks for the link.

 

I wired the trailer wiring into the rear light harness. I then unplug the rear light harness from under my dash. Just a matter of unplugging one connecter. With a trailer plug on my front bumper. I'm ready to go.
Easy. No diodes.

 

I have a 4flat connection mid frame and had an 8' flat to flat extension along the frame to the tow bar. This way In theory I can plug in a tester and check if I have a bulb out or wiring issue in the dash and if I drop the driveshaft I might as well swap the connection while down under.

 

When I wired my Jeep I ran standard Trailer flat four wire from the turn signal wires to the rear of my Jeep. That way it is the same as a trailer, Green is for Irish, they are always Right, Yellow is for Chinese, they are always Left, Brown is for Tail Lights, and White is for Ground. I can put a trailer plug on the fire wall unplug the rear lights, plug in a trailer plug and no need for Diodes. I use a Tow Dolly, so no need to change my Jeep wires.

 

And the ironic thing is, I'm still using my magnetic towing lights....

 

The diodes arrived today and I wired them in. Works perfectly, and no wiring changes needed now when I plug in my tow bar.

 

So where did you wire them in? Under dash?

 

Many good ideas here, I'll add to the confusion. I bought a set of LED trailer lights that included the pre made wiring harness. I preferred this route because I don't like unnecessary connections in any thing, just another place for a possible failure. The whole set, two taillights and wiring harness was ~$70 at local FLAPS, probably less expensive on the net. It came with a pre-made flat 4 wiring connector. The only drawback I see is the extra set of taillights. YMMV. Good Luck

 

Yes. I had recently ran all new wiring to the rear of the Jeep, and a new 4 conductor to the grill for a tow bar plug. They all landed behind the dash. Pulled the dash out enough to reach from above, and wired them in. I’m not limber enough to get under the dash from below.

I have a set of those I used when I towed the JK. Just another thing to setup. On the CJ I decided to make it easier and use the diodes.
