Has anyone intentionally bent their T14 shift lever? Mine's stock, but I have a thing for the bent ones.

Mine...It doesn't hit anything...I just like the double bend look.

Something like this would be cool.

    You have an oxy-acetylene torch?

I had to bend the cane on my T18 as it hit the dash. I don't think propane will be hot enough. You could try it though and see. I used an acetyline and air plumbers torch.

Did you remove it to do it?

Back in the '60s I got to ride along in some of the Ford fire trucks, Same bend on them. It's just how they fit below the dashboards. If it really bothers you. you do need enough heat to bend things and try to not hurt yourself.
Red hot steel is frigging hot and won't cool down as fast as you may think.

seen a buddy of mine . bend stuff with a MAP gas propane torch . safety first . if your going to do it in jeep . remove seats . wrap a wet rag around bottom of shifter cane . use a piece of pipe for a handle ." DON'T TOUCH HOT METAL"

Excuse me if I laugh. I burned myself several times and learned how to approach a possible hot piece of metal. Pliers are your friend and use the back of your fingers to test the temps. Your natural feeling is to clamp on it, and it will will keep you from doing it.

I've bent plenty of metal and have had the good fortune of not burning myself. (y)

I think if I do this...I'll remove it from the Jeep...Better safe than sorry.

I've heated and bent many....usually in the Jeep. Even my TJ. Just wrap the bottom of the cane with wet rags.

I don't know... I've always felt it was "jeep thing" that I can lean my right knee against the t-90 shifter. It's a part of me after all these years.

I have a T-14 with a double bend shift cane. I just always figured it was stock, and that way because the donor trans came out of a odd-fire commando. Can send pics, or maybe just search for a commando shift cane?

Mapp gas isn't going to do it. You'll need a set of oxy/acetyline torches. Slowly heat an area at least 6" long and take your time. Try to get it right the first time. Oh, and use that damp rag at the bottom, even though heat travels up. Let it cool slowly.

Focker, if you bend it that far will you have to lean forward to shift it? I am only 5' 8" so the stock T 90 works well for me. At 70 years old I am probably only 5' 6.5" actually. If you use an acetylene torch heat it slowly don't let it start to sparking, stop heating, and wait until it is the same color in the area you want to bend, before you start your bend. That will make your bend a smooth radius, not a kinky bend. As an Ironworker I have done a little heat shaping. Good luck.
Boy your dash looks clean, nice job.

I simply can't imagine anyone not having a O-A torch set up. I wouldn't last a week without mine.

I have one at my friend's shop 1 mile down the road. It's a great program...He stores it, fills the bottles and let's me use anytime I want. My Dad has a setup that I could "store" at my place for him, but I like having the room in the garage to move around.

I'm not sure? I haven't checked into the geometry of it yet. Re: the dash...Thanks. It was one of the first things I addressed...I like simple.

For the record, I did my bends with the cane installed. Otherwise it's difficult to tell if you bent it too much, not enough, the wrong way.
