The Official "What The Heck Is This?" Thread

Hi guys;

I'm restoring (mostly) a 1969 cj5 and found the end of some kind of fiber woven (?) strap attached via a screwed clamp at two locations. The one in this (bottom frame view) photo is about mid way back on the drivers side.

'Anyone know what this ? Since i'm trying hard to be authentic i'll try to duplicate it if I can determine it's function.

This white paint stenciled number appeared on both sides of my 1969 cj5 frame when I pressure washed it yesterday. Just for fun, does anyone know what this number represents? Thanks.

 

Bet it is military of some kind.

 

looks like a jeep part number

 

My '60 Sedan Delivery has those same kind of numbers in about the same location. I assume they are part numbers for the frame rail. Now I'm going to have to search this in the Parts Catalog.
Doing a concours restoration?

900,000 series numbers are typical of Jeep parts numbers

 

Here's another one... APR291969... My frame has a birthday!




And these stampings appeared near the rear cross member weldment. I know welders of pressure vessels stamp each weld with their identification number... maybe assembly welders did too.


I forget where on the frame this showed up. I'll check later this week if anyone is curious.


And finally each of the frame horns were stamped 425L (on the left one) and 425R on the right one) near the leaf spring brackets.

I'm guessing it's the finished frame p/n, then. The date stencil (APR291969) was close by and the same paint and the same font type and size as the 948939 number. And other indent stamps (425L & 425R) appear in the long frame members.

I'm doing a restoration, but not with all original parts. I'll try to be as authentic (if that is the right word) as I can afford. no lift, no big tires, 'trying to go "stock" but with a US Navy theme (color and markings). I bought a MD JUAN tub kit and started to document the build in another section. I only put "what the heck is this" stuff here. Today I have a bare frame I'm preparing for primer and paint. I wonder if I can save and protect these stencils with multiple coats of clear coat... thoughts? Thanks.

 

Wire work, I just finished installing the Energy Suspension polyurethane kit 2.18104G 55-75 Jeep CJ5/CJ6. This kit has the spring bushings & the body bushings. My suspension works great & most of the body rattles are eliminated.

I'm likely to use pieces of tires for the body mounts. I also bought the poly leaf/shackle bushings but i'm at least a month away from that assembly

 

A front grill came with my 1969 CJ5 MD JUAN tub kit which I was not expecting. It does not match my existing 1969 grill (color, grey). Can anyone please identify it (color, black) from the following photos?

I'm sure the AMC - era guys will chime in here, but I'm pretty sure that's a grill for a '72+. Definitely not a Kaiser or Willys era.
