V6 Jeeps didn't need the stay cable because they were equipped from the factory with a cable clutch linkage. The cable attached the the clutch fork and the cable housing to a bracket on the transfercase; any longitudinal displacement of the motor/trans/tcase relative to the chassis would not change this distance (therefore, no "bucking" issue). I suspect your cable linkage has been change to something else.

Only the last year or so of production had the cable op. clutch.

Was not aware of that, although the 2 '69s I had were cable equipped (clutch).

That would explain my '70 then, I've got the cable op clutch in mine. I got down under it last night, and there's no indication that the little fork for the ball was ever on my crossmember....

My 66 Tux was virtually untouched when I bought it in 1970. It has the engine stay cable and I will keep it original. No bucking or jerking ever. V6.

I'D love to see how/where the forward end of the stay cable attaches. Can you post a picture?

And no idea what this is be it's welded to the frame and has two springs that stretch to the brake pedal.

    nickmil In mothballs.

I can't remember which for sure but the engine end of the stay cable threaded through a plate that bolted either to the bellhousing to transmission adapter bolt hole directly or to the transmission to transmission adapter bolt hole. It used a longer bolt to compensate for the plate. The plate was around 3/8" thick iirc.

    Looks like this:

Great pictures Dave, Thanks. I put mine back on, wasn't sure what it done, but thought it was important or it would not be there. Thanks again all.

Looked for pic but cant find it. Looks exactly like what nickmil posted and my bracket is also about 3/8 thick. Bolts through a mounting bolt bottom corner of the transmission adapter to bell-housing. Mount in as straight as possible and just take up the cable slack. No torque or tightening specs avail. It is just simply a stay cable.

Okay, Thanks Walt & Nick, I'll fab something up, see what improvement I can get. Got nothing to lose by trying.

okay in my basket case of parts in my slow road to recovery, these are the next conundrum....I believe one to be the fuel line as its close to the correct size. One appears to be the heater core bracket, the other two are mystery parts.
