ojgrsoi has it above - the switch unit was mounted under the bottom edge of the dash to the right of the steering column.

Ah, I'm obviously missing that little switch unit and missing any defroster duct work. Thanks!

And missing some vacuum lines that go to that semi-circular gizmo with the three nubbins on it.

That switch can also be a bear to get to work correctly..........especially if it's been laying around for a few decades..........likewise the additional defroster duct has some Vacuum canisters that also have been hard to find replacements for..................Maybe someone else on here has solved or sourced a different canister to fix these.[IMG]

I ordered what I thought was the correct sender: Gas Tank Sending Unit Kit 70-86 CJ 15 GAL Steel Tank 5357373K 17724.09 FREE SHIP | eBay

The mounting ring doesn't fit. The collar on the tank has two offset slots, while the locking ring on the new sender has four locking tabs.

Is the tank not what we thought it was or did I order the wrong sending unit?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

The two tabs in the tank should hold the sending unit in the proper tank orientation.
The 4 tabs on the locking ring are for turning/twisting the locking ring as the o-ring is compressed.
As long as the locking ring fits into the tank opening and will turn, I don't see any issues with my old eyes.

It's the least I can do since I've learned so much from your posts -- especially the V6 blueprint rebuild thread. Epic. (y)

I can see it now, but I don't recognize it. Probably associated with an accessory, if it's Jeep.

Wasn't a part of one of the swing out windshields, was it?
