Factory V6? Or factory T-98? Can't be both.

Not sure what you mean, V6 Dauntless with a T-98 trans, I assumed this was a rare option offered over a few years...this according to Novak:

"the T98 transmission is a heavy-duty, top loading, truck style four-speed. The Borg-Warner T98 transmission was introduced in 1948 and persisted until 1964 in Ford trucks. It was installed into Jeeps starting in 1955. The Jeep T98 was a desirable, but rare option for Jeeps through 1972, as it was a special order item for civilian versions. It was more common in military versions of the CJ like the M38A1."

Either way, looking for a trans mount that would work with that setup, Thanks

I have a T-98 in a "62 CJ-5 with the F-134 engine, and the piece you have found looks just like what I have. While I have you on the line, so to speak, I need to replace the shifter boot. I ordered one, but it was not made for the long throw that the T-98 shifter has, and it tore after only a few operations. Have you found a boot for yours, and if so, can you supply a part number/supplier? I ordered another one, specifying exactly what I needed and got the same boot. Sent it back for a refund, since supplier had no idea.

    Thanks...

You are reading more into the Novak description than is there. And they are wrong about 1972 - the T-98 went away (domestically) with the F134 at the end of the 1971 model year.

The T-98 was only offered with the F134. There was a close-ratio T-18 offered with the 225 in 1971, and possibly in earlier years, but reports of those are apocryphal. The '71 T-18 definitely existed, and they are really scarce. No other factory offerings.

I expect that your Jeep was either converted to a V6, or to a T-98 or T-18. Note that the top casting of a T-18 says "T-98" even though it's a T-18. A T-18 conversion is more likely than a T-98.

T-98 in military Jeeps? Now that's one I've not heard before, anyone else hear of that? Besides the 5/4 ton series of course.

I recall hearing that some M38A1s came with the T-98, and pretty sure I saw one on here. I have seen quite a few M38A1s, but I don't recall ever seeing a T-98 one in person. So I think Novak likely is stretching by saying "more common." There are quite a few F134/T-98 CJs out there.

I did find a shifter boot awhile back but it has since cracked so no recommendation from me, but if someone has a suggestion please forward it on to us!

I'm not an expert in transmissions in any way, just going by what the PO told me. I do know it's a 4 speed!! I'm fairly certain it came stock with a V6 since I have the "original engine" sitting in my garage on a stand.

Back to the question, would my link to the mount be the one I want??? As cheap as it is I'll order it and let everyone know if it fits. Thanks

So, "inquiring minds want to know" ...what's the best way to find out what transmission I have?? Does a VIN # show what original equipment that came with it? Too bad one can't get a build sheet.

A factory installation will have a tag under one of the top cover bolts, with a Warner Gear number, a Jeep PN and "T-18" typically. If you have a tag, someone here should be able to decode the Jeep PN.

Otherwise, look at the side of the case for cast-in numbers. A T-18 will likely say "13-01" or possibly "T-18." A T-98 will say "T-98" as I recall.

Looks like someone added the T-98 in a previous life?

Yep, that's clear. Nothing wrong with the T-98 ... it's the predecessor to the T-18, and they are functionally the same. The most likely swap donor would be a F134 CJ with the T-98, I would think, but it's hard to know what conversion products were available back in the day. Swapping in a T-98 may have been easy in the '70s. What do your floor covers look like? The CJ T-98/T-18 floor covers are quite distinctive, and if the T-98 came from another Jeep, the swapper would likely take the floor covers for the swap.

This is from an intermediate Jeep, so ignore the transfer case shifter. The covers are the same for the T-98 and T-18 CJs.

Now that i'm looking, the floor covers seem to be remade to fit the trans. Nice job, never thought that it wasn't factory.

Look close and you can see vermin tracks across the cover..........I hate them critters, these have met their demise.

For those counting, the little"fifth" stick toward the rear is for the PTO.

So, after taking these pictures I see the jeep needs a little TLC. Tomorrow it gets a bath, paint the bezel and buy new shift boot. Not giving the needed attention to her lately, need to fix that!

achuto, Did you find enough information to answer what you were seeking in the original/1st post?

A side note follows--I have a '67 Cj5 odd-fire V6 with a T-98. Axles are geared 4.88 --On the flat in 1st it will do 0.5 mph and on a downhill slope it will stay under 1 mph (GPS speedometer). Reverse is slower still--geared lower. The V-6 and the 4-speed T-98 did not come originally together; mine is a conversion. You can find "rock crawling" calculators on the 'net. I believe my 1st gear final crawl ratio to be 76.81 and reverse to be 89.32---but in 4th with overdrive it'll go 60 mph (quickly) and beyond (not so safely, --one reason: it is has a 2-1/2" lift).
