Ross Box Disassembly

Hi all,

I am tearing down my spare V-6 ross box and prepping it for a full rebuild.

Does anyone know of a non-invasive way to remove the pesky little cup that sits over the horn wire tube?

What good would any thread be without pictures...

 

I don't have an answer for you Hayden but, I would love a detailed thread on rebuilding one of these boxes. I think I am not alone. Go forth and.....good luck.

 

I rebuilt mine a long time ago and had the same question. Ended up ignoring it and put it back together.

 

Have you watched this video? I cant remember if it addresses the horn tube removal, but it is a great starting point.

I watched his presentation on rebuilding a TL box, but it never talked about removing that race. Any ideas short of using a slide hammer and a pilot bearing puller?

 

All I can think of is removing the horn wire tube and then brazing it back in.

 

I have seen them broke off before. don't do that. You will not be happy. That bottom race is not nearly as important as the busing for the sector shaft. IIRC when i rebuilt mine it spoke of installing the bushing and reaming to correct tolerance. A cheap adjustable reamer to 7/8ths will do it. I can't remember if the bronze bushings in the kit were oil impregnated, but you can buy them. They are called Oilite bushings and are bearing surfaces. the more you use them the more lubricity comes out. They are typically used dry though. Mc master carr would have these if they are available. If you're using the ross gear the V6 one is superior to the prior ones. Its bigger and makes steering easier.

 

I know this is an old thread, but I took a piece of pipe that fit over the horn tube but inside the bearing race and drove the tube out, then pushed the bottom race up from the bottom.

 

How did you traffic the tube?

Sorry -- "Re-affix" the tube. Spell check error and I didn't catch it.

 

The tube was still attached to the round metal plate, so I put a little silicone around it and pressed it back in from the bottom, don't think the silicone was really necessary as it was a very tight fit.
