HEI distributor cap #1 terminal

Hello All,

I have looked at the previous threads about the HEI distributor conversion, but I have not found a way to make sure of the #1 terminal. I found a web page called "HEI exposed" which has this photo of the underside of the cap and a verbal instruction. It says #1 is at 12:00 o'clock here and then #2, #3, etc, but it does not say if that is going around clockwise or CCW as shown in the picture.

So I took a guess- I added numbers to the photo shown here, but can anyone here confirm that I have the terminals in this photo numbered correctly?

I plan on swapping the distributor out over Christmas, so I will take photos as I go and post a thread just for another record of the process.

 

looks to rotate clockwise. set #1 at TDC and go round the cap putting wires in respective positions

I think your assumption that you can use any of the three you have numbered is incorrect. Because of the different tab lengths on the various terminals there is a specific set that you can use for #1. It's been too long since I did mine, but the info is in the articles.

 

I looked at my distributor and it was set wrong. wrong #1 on the cap. I pulled the distributor and used the above instructions with some other search information. It ran ok before, now it runs amazing. Pull off and plug the vacuum advance hose, set to 8~10 degrees BTDC with timing light. When you plug the vacuum line back in it will have 30 to 40 degrees advance. go do burn outs.

be careful about too much advance, you can burn your valves. You can put in an adjustable vacuum advance to bring it back a little.

My 71 is set up and looks just like the picture Warloch posted. I dont have much exp. with the 225 yet but I've done a lot of small block chevys. Chevy HEI has allways had #1 just to the left of the battery plug then goes around clockwise. And its allways easier for me to work at it from above, cause that's how you allways see it.

Thanks For all the replies! I've got it figured out now, just need to find time to get it all installed. Warloch's picture was a big help.

 

its pretty easy if you do it as the instructions are stated. I had to grind away part of the intake to do it. I also had to remove the front intake bolt as well.

 

i tried that. still does not fit on mine. have to use maybe a taper head or machine something special. everyone else's results may vary.

 

make sure they are odd fire. The star shaped thing at the base on the inside of the distributor is different between the two. I believe its a hall effect sender.

Its relatively easy to do, but you will need to grind on the intake a bit and you may want to put an extra ground on the distributor housing. The #1 pole is important too. Read everything about it on this site and you will do well. I installed it and it ran ok, then I read the right way to do it here and it runs amazing.

sorry I didn't follow up. The article from rich Mott pretty well covers all you need to know. I folowed it step by step, and all went well. My jeep now runs like a top. My grinding job was not as well thought out, I ground off the button head screw too far, so when it comes time to pull the intake manifold I'll need to easy-out it, but hopefully that won't be any time too soon.

The only photos I have that may help is showing you the area that needs grinding. I bought my HEI distributor complete, so I don't have any pics to show you on building the distributor.

I also have a photo showing the one hold down clip removed from the HEI cap. This is also to allow clearance to the intake.

I don't have any photos of the finished install, but I'll get some as soon as I can.

I put in an adjustable vacuum advance from ACCEL (part no. 31035), it does indeed help get the timing under control at high speeds, so I do recommend it. Its easy and they are available cheap from FLAPS and amazon
