New Jeep! My 48 CJ2A

Well apparently not all D25's are the same. This one is out of a early-mid 60's CJ5. I have no caster. I had installed 2* shims before, and even with those installed I measure between 0* and 1* caster, and it wanders all over the road. I had no idea this housing would be different than the old one...

 

So, with the 1" Superlift springs and 1" of shackle lift, the Jeep has a pretty good rake to it. I'd like it to sit level. I could put shorter shackles on the rear, but I wouldn't mind putting shorter shackles on the front to gain a *little* bit of caster back. So, I ordered 2 1/2" springs for the front. Hopefully I can put stock length shackles on the front, and still lift the front enough to level the Jeep out. Pics to come when I get them installed.

 

1 inch springs, and 1" lift shackles removed. Replaced with 2.5" springs, and stock shackles. The Jeep now sits level instead of nose down, and I gained 5* of caster (!). I now have 10* of caster, which is more than it needs. Tomorrow I'll swap the 6* shims for 2* shims. 6* should be good. Factory spec is 3*, but I like a little more; it makes them track a little straighter..

 

I'm kinda picky about certain things....Like how they look, and more importantly, how they drive..

 

I'll tell ya, I work on one or more of the vintage Jeeps almost every day. Yesterday was removing the hard top and installing a roll bar and soft top on my son's '59, and today the flatty springs, and putting some different bulbs in the Hella headlights I just installed on the Tux. There's always something.... But, it's what I like doing.

 

Thanks! I like this height/ stance. It's high enough to look good, but not too high to still look stock-ish.

 

Oh, and I need to notch the skidplate; the front drive shaft is dangerously close at static height.

 

I found a really nice fender for the RF. I'm going to do a little body work, and get this Jeep painted something besides olive drab. Stay tuned..

 

Not sure how fast this will happen. My son's Jeep is getting sprayed next week or the week after, so we'll still have to put it together. And, I still have a few things happening with the Tux.
The 2A has had some plate steel welded on the rear corners and then just kind of feathered in with bondo, and I'm going to grind those off. The body corners underneath aren't really too bad, but they'll take some time to fix.

 

This is a lower rear fender to frame tab. It didn't look like it had ever been off. Is this Picket Gray?

 

It's at the high school auto shop and they've been working on it. Looks like next week they'll spray it. My son bought a gallon of Krylon Farm and Implement paint from Johnny's Carquest.

 

Well, sort of. It was originally white, then it had what appears to be a decent blue paint job, and then it was painted olive drab with a brush...So they have lots of sanding to do..
