New Jeep! My 48 CJ2A

My Dad has been working on a front axle for the flatty (he likes to work on these, and he needs things to keep him busy).
Just another D25, but he did the spindle stud conversion, and it'll get Spicer joints, and 10" brakes.

 

It's farther along than in these pics. He had to make all the welded on brake line brackets the flatty uses (this axle is out of a early 60's CJ5) and that's all done. It should be done in the next week or so. He works slowly, but he is meticulous.

 

In all the years I've never put the studs in on the 25 or 27s. I may try that if I keep the one in the Blue '49.

 

We've done studs on every d25 and 27 he or I have done. My flatty certainly doesn't need it, but it was a fun little project for my Dad.

 

Correct. We used an 11/32 pilot, turned it down so it *just* fit. Then used the pilot in the counter bore cutter to align each hole, then clamped the knuckle housing down, and removed the pilot to do the cut. Figured there would be less chance of damaging the threads without the pilot.

 

The bolt heads were turned down a bit. The counterbore is 5/8"

 

The two opposing holes, at 9 and 3 o'clock, were cut slightly deeper than the rest; the bolts that hit the "ball" when turned to full lock...

 

Hopefully we'll finish it up this weekend....Can't wait to get the flatty back on the road, it's been down for 4 days!

 

Already sitting on the springs. I'll finish the install tomorrow.

The difference in braking with the 10" front is nothing short of substantial. It also steers nice without the notchy knuckle bearings..
