Glove Compartment Lock

Realizing that locks only keep honest people honest, I would like a little more security on my glove compartment than a push button. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone makes a key lock latch that can replace the push button latch on my glove compartment door on my 1974 Jeep CJ5?

They can be hard to find. There has been discussion on this before so a search may turn up something here. I want to say an application for a Chrysler product was mentioned but that may not be correct.

I see the Tuffy Security Products make a glove box for 1976-1986 CJ5's and CJ6's. I am wondering if there is some way I could fit it into my 1974 CJ5?

I think the blower moter will be in the way but you could cut the back of the replacement.

Someone recently posted that an ammo can makes a good replacement for the box itself, probably as good as the Tuffy box. Of course you'd still need to find a stronger latch/door if you're worried about anything more than your basic casual Friendly Local Neighborhood "Stage I" type thief.

On the other hand, "Stage II" thieves will go at it with a crowbar & whether or not they succeed your dash is going to be a mess. :(

IMO you are better off hiding your valuables rather than locking the glove box. A powerful magnet works well to hold your registration (in a plastic bag) to the back side of the dash.

The toolbox can be locked quite securely, however. Look for "cabinet locks" and "cam locks." You'll have to drill a hole for the lock in the toolbox lid.

This. The ones for '72-'75 have a notch built into them for clearance and the dimensions are slightly different than '71 and older (the opening is just enough different they don't fit without mods).

Yes. No. It went with my '73 CJ-5 when I sold it, long ago.
