    hey all!

so I took my engine into the shop for the re-build and the guy tells me that the AMC split bore 4bbl intake I have is pretty rare/hard to find...

    any idea why?

is it because so many people have gone to aluminum versions by the 'big' names?

just curious... as I think theres one on my wifes JEEP as well

    TIA!

    yall have a great day!

Mmm. IMO it's a boat anchor (sorry), and the shop doesn't know what they are talking about.

There are mainly two 4V AMC V8 Gen 3 manifolds, aside from any exotic car applications - the iron "square bore" manifold and the iron "spread bore" manifold. The earlier square manifold was used with the Motorcraft 4300 carb, and has the same pattern as Holley and Edelbrock carburetors. The spread bore was used with the Motorcraft 4350, and its spread bore pattern is unique to that carburetor. It looks similar to Rochester Quadrajet spread bore pattern, but it's not the same and it's not compatible. It only works with the 4350. The 4350 carb has a lot of issue with leaking (warpy tops?), and is not well liked. It was only used on Jeeps and some Ford 460 apps (Lincolns IIRC) and was also troublesome in that application.

So in the AMC world, it's basically worth its weight in iron.

Plenty to read about here - https://www.google.com/search?q=site:ifsja.org+AMC+spread+bore+manifolds

As Tim posted, the 4350 carb is a POS....Trans Dapt makes an adapter to mount astandard Holley or Edelbrock 4 barrel on it.
The bolt pattern and primary throttle bores are the same, the adapter is basically a thich spacer with tapered bores on the secondary side to line everything up. I think that if your budget allows, an Edelbrock performer intake would be a better choice.

with this in mind... i was thinking of this... just kicking some ideas around...

i can ID what was on before other than a Holley... i can find a 'list number' anywhere on it... it ran well, but i am wondering with the 'new' engine, will it still run OK... maybe i get the intake ahead of time and have ol' engine dude put it on for me...

    any thoughts on these together?

NOT racing the JEEP or climbing trees... but would like some get up and go when i want it to...

thanks everyone... without you jeepers, i would still be sitting on a pile of scrap metal!

Stay away from the Torker. I'm catching 3 kinds of heck trying to get my 304 timing just right. Also I'm currently working on this old Carter Comp. AFB.
That setup is what I want to do or something close to it.

If you want experienced advice on what 4V carb setup to run on a 360 Jeep, you could ask at www.ifsja.org or www.fsjnetwork.com ... I'm done with carburetors, other than the carbs that are already on my Jeeps. Instead, I would find a factory 2V iron manifold and add throttle body fuel injection.

interesting on the TBI, and thanks! i have it (TBI) in my 95 Tahoe and i like it... but if i keep playing with THIS jeep, i'll never get it finished

i'll ask around on the other sites...

what i MEANT to write was that i CANNOT ID the holley thats on it, and i CANNOT find the list number... whats the Torker? i have never heard of that

Torker is an intake manifold from Edelbrock that is recommended for street or racing purposes. I am probably going to go out and buy another intake.
Got some pics of that Holley?

not this second, but I will take some tonite and post them up here !

I was thinking of having engine dude install a new intake (I don't know if my doing it will void the warranty)... but I have to decide on what to get 1st...

all these choices... so little of my own knowledge mehh

The "list" (ID) # on a Holley is normally stamped in the front of the air horn (the part where the choke flap is that sticks up into the air cleaner). It should be visible looking at the carb from the front.
I worked for 11 years at a shop that was a Holley warehouse distributor, so I can probably identify it if you post some pics.

OK, got the pix... here they are... the area where i assume the 'list' number is supposed to be, theres a paper sticker (like a grocery store price tag)...

heres a shot of every side...

thanks in advance for the help!

kinda looks like a double pumper.

That is a Holley 1850 600 cfm vacuum secondary 4bbl. (you're right, the number is under that sticker)
Should work fine on your 360 and with a thick gasket like that, no adapter necessary.
Get some off road needle/seats for off road use.

    thanks cooljeepguy!

worked ok before the engine re-build... just didn't know if it would work as well after I got the engine back... i'll keep cleaning it up and see about the seats/needle... ive never done a rebuild of a carb before... all I know is that you need a clean area and space... and maybe a camera

    thanks again!

Let me know if you have questions. ...it's a very simple carb, I've rebuilt literally 100's of those.

    will do, and thanks...

heres one for starters (I can PM you if you prefer)

do you think there will be any problems with the 'new' engine and this carb... tuning etc...

im trying to avoid topping my new engine with a 25 year old turd and hoping that it will run right... im sure theres a boatload of parts (springs etc) missing from this unit...

how do I know if this is a -1 or a -2 or a (-X).... asking the big G reveals that there are different variations of the 1850 as far as rebuild kits go

is 1850 the model number? (a look at jegs/summit) shows it as a 4160... and most (if not all) are listed as for square bore with manual choke...

now im confused, because I have a spread bore and have never used a manual choke on the 360... never had the need I guess

The manual choke lever is the one sticking out on the passenger side of the carb. If the carb is in good condition and jetted properly, you'll need to use it for cold starts. You can also get a conversion kit to electric choke if you prefer.
Purchase a genuine Holley kit! (Part# 37-119 IIRC) This is very important!!!! There's a lot of crappy generic Holley parts out there....get the real stuff.

    will do...

weird that i never had to use the choke... ever...

i just cant make a decision... seems like every time i turn around, im throwing $$ at this thing mehh
