Looking great. Can't wait to see how it works out. I guess I should start looking harder for a tdi now.

I had a plywood template made on the water jet to make sure everything works before cutting the real thing.

Some minor modifications have to be made.

And I also checked the concentricity of the crank adapter. They were within 5 thousands.

Got the adapters back from my buddies with their water jet. I just had to the finish machine work.

Centering the part up for counter boring.

    And the counter bore.

And the crank adapter after one screwup. I put the counter bore on the wrong side, luckily there was enough room to redrill the hole. The issue was the drawing was backwards.

But it worked in the end!

You should rightly duplicate the f-up hole for balance. (y)

I thought about making a steel plug and pressing it in.

Now that I have the engine sitting in my half a jeep frame, I was able to build engine mounts. I have to make one more trip to the hardware store for more bolts.

Been plugging away on this project. It's all the stupid little things that take the most time. I made this little manifold up for the heater connection. I can screw the temp gauge sending unit and electric fan switch into the two bungs on the top and then clamp the hose on the piece of tubing.

And then I machined up a remote oil filter adapter. I'm not sure if I'll put the tee on the engine or on the filter side. It's for the turbo oiling. I'm hoping next weekend to drop it in my jeep if my clutch gets here!

I got the mounts all done for the power steering pump, air compressor and alternator.

I'm mighty proud of my tig welds! Too bad no one will ever see them. :(

And out comes my beloved L head. But it's without an issue. The TDI hits the ross steering system. Guess I'll have to upgrade to ford reverse rotation steering. So, I'll have to pull the steering out tomorrow before dropping the tdi in.

Sometimes all you need is a good night's sleep and to look at the project with fresh eyes. The simplest solution was staring me right in the face the whole time!

If you look at this picture, you can see how far the drag link and pitman are stick out from the frame rail.

I pulled the pitman arm off this morning.

And heated it up and added some weld to it and bent it the other way. Then I let it naturally cool down as to not change the material's structure.

And the drag link had to be altered as well. I scribed a mark with the grinder.

Then I cut it and spun it 180° and you can see my sleeve in place ready to go.

After welding it up, it fit like it was mean to be there! I also had to put the remote reservoirs on the master cylinder to make enough room for the drag link, but it clears everything through its full range of motion. I may have to alter my pre built engine mount now, but that is easier than reinventing the wheel, or steering wheel for that matter!

It took me over a day to get the engine bolted up. It kept wanting to twist the wrong way and it just so tight against the fire wall.

I put the bigger 9.25" clutch on.

And after putting the engine in once, I had to take it off and block off the coolant passage on the back of the head. There is absolutely no room back there! I have another plan to hook up my heat.

And it is starting look like something!

More progress made on this project. I needed a new starter because the toyota one hit the turbo. This new starter is able to be clocked as well.

I built a schedule 40 down pipe that goes around the starter nicely. Just have to sandblast and paint with high temp paint.

I made a return line that screws into the fuel tank drain. Not the extension I soldered on to get the returning fuel above or mostly above the fuel level in the tank.

The plumbing nightmare for the oil filter is all done too. It feeds the engine, turbo and oil pressure gauge.

It might not look like much, but it is coming along!

Just have to run the fuel return line and hook up the wiring and this engine should come to life!
