Damn this build really makes me want a 6. Where did you find the body armor that just needs to be trimmed?

 

Both the rocker guards and rear quarter panels came from GenRight Offroad.

I have a set of stock LJ Rubicon rocker guards and had tried them and they were to short, then I saw GenRight's stertched one and length would work. They actully gave the length in the description. Figure I could cut and add metal as need to fit and bolt up on the bottom. As it turned out the rocker guards fit with the way I mounted the body all most exactly on the bottom, some times you get lucky.

I have a Scrambler and had measured the body so I knew that Scrambler panel would be big enough to cover most of the side and could be trimed to fit.

I am not pushing GenRight(they were great to work with) that is just where I bought them, others may make the same thing that will work.

Cut out bracket with the same outside radis as the tube. Used a square against the body to postion them and clamped


marked the postion on body drilled holes in plates and then clamped them one again, drilled holes in body, and bolted them on.

Welded in 3/4" square tube braces. Part III will be coveing with sheet metal, but it will be down the road a bit. I have other sheet metal projects planned and am going to get it all sheared later.

 

Adding a steering column.

I found a of brake and clutch pedal assembly from an 80's CJ am installing it in the CJ 6 body.





Now the fun part getting the TJ steering box hooked to the CJ steering column. But I have a few ideas.

 

Something I noticed when I removed my dash to work on the steering. The speedo dial had turned up side down in the housing from being rolled around in the rotissere doing the body work! You may want to remove your speedo before turning it around and around.

 

Hey Don, a little heads up! I think your going to find out that the pedal's in that assembly are too long and will hit the angled portion of the floor long before they have completed there stroke.............Those pedals from the center pin to the foot pad are about 16" long, and 14" is about all that can be had in that area in a early CJ.............and that is assuming that you mount the pedal assembly high enough...................you also need to check the pedal ratio's from the center pin to the push rod point and then to whatever brake & clutch system you may be using...........you almost have to work backwards from the engine side of the firewall where the Master , Booster & clutch slave if used will be mounted.

Tarry99, I noticed the pedals will be to long. I am running an auto so the clutch pedal will be come part of the brake pedal at some point and the brake pedal will be shortened, or bent as needed. I am not going to worry to much about it until I get seats in so I can make the changes to be comfortable.

I have the matching brake booster for the pedal assembly so I shouldn't have a problem with the rod (I hope) it all came off the same Jeep.

I will probably hunt down a tilt steering column as well later. I found that one cheap so I will use it for now. Again the seats will come in to play for the final column. I may have to spend the money and buy the fancy telescopic one!

CJ5/442, Thanks, I am begining to get a bit excited about it after I put it all together and got a chance to see what it might look like. But I still have a long way to go.

 

Being that I am going to run hard top I wanted A/C So I replaced the brackets and accesories off the 4.3 with a set of brackets and assessories the included an A/C compressor.

Took this off




It now looks like this. Now A/C is possible. I can cool now I need to heat it. I saw in another post on here some one mentioned about Jeep Air, looking at their heat/cool unit, might be a good idea, or Vintage Air's units. I have an American Air under dash A/C unit out of a CJ that I can use for A/C but that does not solve the heater issue. So the Jeep air looks enticing. Kill two birds with one shot.

 

In the "for whats it worth department".........

I have had some conversatoins with a few people about how close my stretched TJ frame is to a stock LJ frame both on here and other sites. So today I took some time and measured the stretched TJ frame under the CJ 6 and my 2006 LJ's frame.

Stretched TJ frame measures 150in
Stock 2006 LJ frame measures 157 1/4
So there is a 7 1/4 inch difference

I thought the LJ frame would have been closer than that being the wheel base is not that much different.

I know that from the fire wall to the front of the CJ6 wheel well (rocker panel) is longer than my LJ, the stock Rubicon rocker gurad is to short to cover the CJ 6 rocker. So there must besome difference in the wheel opening and behind the wheel opening on the LJ. Now I will have to do some more measureing.

 

I have been working on converting a utility trailer to a "Jeep camping trailer" (if I get time I start a thread on it) so I have not done much to the CJ 6 for a while. I wanted to get the trailer to the point of sand blasting so when I start sandblasting on the CJ 6 body I can do the trailer as well. But I got back to the CJ 6 the other day and skined the rear tube fenders. So here is what they look like.

 

Did a little more.

When I extended the cross member I didn't quite get the curve of the floor right to fit the tunel covers. So I went back in and added a new support for the tunel cover to bolt down to on the cross member.





Now I can add the captive nuts to bolt down the tunel covers.

I also made the floor cover for the DS where the gas tank used to be.

 

Looks good.........I see you also found a good use for those old tool box panels.

 

It may be a bit of a challenge to get the drivers seat to tilt far enough forward to be able to open the lid. I like the concept though. You did a nice job on the metalwork.

 

With the CJ6 fender wells being back further I am thinking of tilting backwards. Planning on a full inside the top roll cage and the seats mount to bars across the Jeep, build the pivots on the bars, still in the planning stage have to see how it all works out.

 

if you use reclining seats a full recline might enable you to still tilt forward..
