    Bias ply vs radial tires.

I had samples of both on my CJ5 and the radials made it ride like a caddy compared to the bias plys.

If it is mainly on-road with some or moderate off-road use, radials hands down. Hardcore off-road still a tossup in my book, but even there, I would use radials.

Radials, made my 5 ride and handle so much better. Still feel every bump, just not near as bad.

Bias ply are less likely to suffer fatal sidewall damage off-road. Also, all else being equal, the vehicle may "sway" less - which is why bias are still used for trailers.

Call me old fashioned, but personally I like the ride height and original looks of bias on the vintage vehicles - which they were designed for. But I don't drive Jeeps for their soft ride.

Radials obviously have many good points, but newer vehicle design has also evolved to take advantage of their characteristics.

Thanks for the response, so this is my issue, I want to stay and look close as possible to original. But when finished my '67 may become my DD. All the radial tires I've been finding that will fit my 5.5 rim has a diameter of 26"-27" but I wanted at least 29". The bias ply will give me that but don't want to use them at the cost of giving up on the handling.
    Any suggestions?

A 235/75R15 should work for you.

BFG says the rim size for LT235/75R15 is 6-7", but it should work ok. You'll get a little sidewall bulge, I expect. That's a 29.1" tire. You could go with late model CJ rims at 6" wide, if you worry.

A LT215/75R15 is also available, which BFG says is ok for 5.5" rims. This is a 27.9" diam tire in Mud-Terrain T/A KM2s.

Have you measured your rims? The actual width is between the inside of the beads.

If you had 16" rims you would have a little more options 215/85/16 average diameter 30.2 or 235/85/16 average diameter 31.5

Had 235/75/15 on my cj6 when I got it, great tire for street and did well enough going over the John Bull trail in Big Bear

The rims I have are stamped K-H / 4.5, but with the rim laying on its side it measures 5.5 from top to bottom.
does any one have any information as to the original size tires that came on them? I also read somewhere that I shouldn't get anything over sized since it may hender the handling.

Top to Bottom? :? You mean outer bead edge to outer bead edge?

Measure from the inside of the bead to the inside of the bead. That's the width.

I found that the radials ride much better. I also think they conform to the terrain better and provide more traction.

I've done some fairly hard core trail rides without side wall damage but I'm always looking out for the sidewalls when I'm in the sharp rocks or sticks. I once poked a half inch diameter stick into the side of a lug and out the face of the tread - luckily I didn't get a flat. Always carry tire repair stuff on the trail.

you need to tell us what you have before we can tell you what it came with.

It has after market 32x10.5 BF Goodrich A/T on it. Looking to get something more original and narrower.

    I believe I finally found it. Standard size was 7.35 x 15
or 186mm wide and 26.8 in diameter. That seems like a small tire for a jeep.
