Left front of the new 30- [IMG]

Right front with upgraded steering. Don't mind the tie rod ends or the drag link. Drag link was cut and welded for size just to get it back on the trailer. Proper new ones have been sourced and will get new TRE's as well.

I still need to figure out how to re-secure the brake line to the housing after putting the new cover on. The bracket uses 2 diff cover bolts and now they are inset so the bracket won't work as is. You can see it sitting above the housing just hangin out right now.

Can you just space that bracket out with a piece of round stock drilled & cut to length and use longer bolts in those two holes? or perhaps getting some say 5/16 x18 x 1" long +/- set screws with a female allen end and put those in first then a nut , spacer and then the bracket and another nut?..........

I don't know if the tapped holes go all the way thru the pumpkin of a d30, but if they do you could put longer bolts thru the needed holes and secure the brake bracket on the back side.

BTW you are doing a great job on this build.

  6. Do you have any pictures of your OD install/linkage? O just got my Saturn OD installed on the Mercedes diesel. It is really nice to be able to split the gears... I am around 2000 at 65 mph.... It is really hilly around here so I run out of power before RPM's. There isn't much "flat ground" and my engine doesn't built much boost until higher rpm. I love your jeep and all the pictures you have posted. Keep it up!

I didn't buy new on the diffs..... or the gears. At least not this time around. Both ARB's are the older 3 piece diffs, the rear was already set up from my CJ-3A, and I had the gears on the shelf too from back when I had money to build diffs..lol. All I really had to spend money on for this build was some bearings, seals, ball joints and tie rod ends. It was still $400+...

Sorry MF, I didn't take much in the way of pics on the OD install.

On the bracket subject- I was wondering if the bolts go all the way through today myself.. I might be able to put in a longer one and secure with a nut on the backside if it does.

Tarry- The bolts are recessed into the diff cover and use Allen bolts to secure it. Not sure I can use the front of this anymore for mounting anything. Looks goods though..lol

The brake line on my Blazer has a bolt like this...

These are rocker bolts. The one on my blazer has a smaller threaded stud with a shoulder. I don't know what you call them.

This is a better picture of the rear brake line bracket and its fitment issue to the cover. It uses the two closest bolts in the stock configuration. The cover is substantially raised at one of them so that's a no go, but if the shorter one (middle) can be swapped out for a longer bolt like what's used on the raised lower bolt, I can probably get a nut on the back side of that to secure the bracket with at least one bolt.

OK do you have a lathe? or some way to make some spacers? Here is how to fix that.........Take a piece of solid bar stock that the OD is the size and depth of the cavity in the cover , machine a piece on a lathe if you cannot find some.........let's just say it's .500 OD by .500 long.......drill a 5/16" hole in it.........get two new 5/16"x18 ( I assume that is 5/16"x18 )socket head bolts that are about .625 longer under the head than the existing bolt you now have........(that length and size would be determined by you measuring them )put the spacer in the cavity first , then put your bracket on top of it and then put your new longer bolt through them both and thread it in.............tighten as normal your brake bracket is now back in it's original location and your cover is now secure again.

I don't have a lathe but I think I can come up with something like that. Good idea.

A lot of Ace Hardware's have steel spacers. You could probably find something that will work. There's always McMaster Carr too.

We have a pretty good size ACE within walking distance from my house... I'll have a look.

I drove it into work today for the first time since the axle and steering swap. Turning radius is much better, I want to believe it's a little easier too but maybe that's wishful thinking....lol. No hint of the wobbles at all. Caster was set at about 6.5-7. Toe was set with a tape measure. Everything works just fine and I really like the 4.27 gears compared to the 3.73.

  17. I have also been thinking about making a gear change.... What are rpm are you running in OD at cruising speed? 55-60mph? I have 3:54 gears and I'm at 1900 in OD @ 60mph which is a about 200rpm below where my engine starts making power. I know your Perkins and my Mercedes are completely different animals but I was just curious. Thanks!

Between 60 and 65 I'm running about 22-2300 rpms.... And my engine makes no power. =)

I also weighed the pig after work last night. 3855 total with full tank, fridge, and 10 gallons of diesel hanging on the carrier. Driver front is 950, PF is 930, Driver rear is 990, and passenger rear is 985. Pretty well balanced.

  19. That is nicely balanced!....but pretty heavy. I would like to weigh mine sometime. So what are the HP/TQ numbers for the perkins? Its pretty impressive that it can keep 4k rolling. so is it running out of RPM at 2300?

I asked several folks here a while back if they knew the weight of there CJ-6's........some had them weighed.........3700-3800 lbs. is pretty average.
