Pielut's Tire Carrier Build

So here is my version of a swing away tire carrier. I wanted a design that would allow me to mount a spare tire and high lift jack with access to the tailgate. It also needed to house a license plate and license plate light. The carrier needed to be a small package but very durable. No plans for spare fuel cans at the moment. Hope you enjoy 

First order of business…parts and more parts.
1-1/4" hinge from Comp4x4.com. I didn’t use the sleeve for my build.
DE-STA-CO clamp from Mcmaster part 5135A23
3/8” thick 1.5” wide Delrin, Mcmaster part 8662K32
Weld-in Pull pin with “T” handle, Mcmaster part 90222A112
LED license plate light, Amazon part (K&S Technologies LED license plate light 25-9170)

First up, cut large hole in bumper. Then burn in the spindle nice and hot.




The steel that is attached to the spindle is .188 wall 2x3 and is offset by 12* to bring the tire carrier away from the body.




Now for some fun on the mill. I used ¼” steel for the tire mount. The plate is machine to accept a 1.5” square piece of tubing that will hold the license plate and light. The license plate bracket will be attached with a single ½” bolt.








The remaining parts of the main structure are .120 wall 2x2.






This contraption needed a good way to self latch and not swing around and damage the body.




Now for the latch…what a time suck that was. I wanted a latch that wouldn’t rattle and would isolate the carrier from any movement. I started with a structure made from ¼” plate. I then cut pieces of Delrin and drilled holes for 5/16” flat head bolts. Simple design, but a lot of time with measuring, cutting, drilling, and fitting.

This latch looks a bit wimpy considering how beefy the rest of the unit is.

Very nice. I am working on a similar design, but i am using a home brew double sheer pivot.

I agree, It's smaller than I anticipated. I will try it since I already forked over $20 for it. If it doesn't hold up I will swap it out for something more substantial.

Almost Mike. Power steering gear in place, new pitman arm. Now to mount the pump and make some custom hoses.
