Spicer 18 Cow Magnets?

So I was re-reading the part on the Spicer 18 on Novak's website, and it got me to thinking. If you have spalling on the intermediate shaft, you could get chips in the transfer case and possibly the transmission as well. So is it possible to float a cow magnet of some kind inside it to collect the chips?

Brass still will not stick to it though. I would put the magnet on the outside of the pan though in fear of it moving inside and getting sucked into the gears...

It is possible to buy drain plugs with magnets, or make one.

Yep, a floating anything in a D18 is a ticket for trouble-not enough room in the bottom of the case if it gets sucked under the output or sliding gears-either broken teeth or case. Magnetic drain plug would work and should be available someplace since it is NPT.

In addition to a magnet you "might could" add a small pipe nipple as well, therby creating a sort of sump for any particles.

Cow magnets, haven't heard that in years. Back in 1976, was working in the Soviet Union on the Kamaz truck project. Contact was C-E Cast out of Cleveland, spotted a couple on the desk and asked the C-E Cast guy what they used cow magnets for. Got a real strange look back, guess he hadn't grown up in dairy country. Turned out they were for actuating magnetic limit switches on the foundry line.

We use them, hung from a short line, for locating metal studs....magnetic drain plug sounds like the best idea to me.

Sounds like a good idea, I never thought of that...

I just stuck a magnet on the bottom of the pan. It's never fallen off. If it did it would just stick to the skid.

Easy enough to epoxy a small cylindrical magnet into the cavity of a pipe-thread drain plug. Then it can be inspected for particles and cleaned at each oil change.

Never mind cow magnets, I need a chick magnet.

You could always epoxy a magnet in the bottom of the t-case pan. The one I stuck on the outside of the pan seemed to work just fine though.

  14. get a rare earth magnet it wont fall off :) we have a set that will stick together through 1 1/2" of wood and its all i can do to get them a part if they get stuck together.
