Fuel tank preferred dealers

My gas tank is rusted and leaking (although the sender works great). I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the Omix-Ada tanks. A nearby Summit has a good price on a tank made by Dorman but I can't seem to find any reviews on Dorman. Does anybody know if they are any good?

 

I don't like Dorman parts in general.

I suspect that the available steel tanks all come from the same source, with different retailers.

 

If you don't mind a used one, There are plenty on ebay, some are less than $20.

I don't mind a used one. Actually, from what I hear, they are better made. Last I checked (yesterday) I couldn't find any used ones on Ebay. I'll probably take this route and just keep looking until one pops up (Ebay or CL). This has been a long rebuild, so it's not like I need the gas tank today. Thanks.

 

Some guys report problems with sealing the gas cap on the underseat versions of the plastic ones. if it were me I would try to adapt the original filler neck to a plastic tank if I was to go that route. Don't know if it can be done easily or not but worth a heads up for anyone considering the plastic tanks. If I was still in NY or any rust belt area I'd be looking at plastic.

Used tanks are a gamble, hopefully you have a good radiator shop you can bring one to to have it checked, cleaned and repaired if you need to. Repairing used tanks is risky business....in more ways than one.

 

Bought mine from an Ebay vendor called "radiatorclassic." It was a brand new reproduction that fit perfectly and appeared to be good quality. Came in bare metal, so I coated with it with POR-15. It was only $41, but the shipping was $49!! Even still at $91 total it was much cheaper than any place else I could find. No markings on it of any kind, so probably came from the same Chinese factory that makes Omix and Dorman and everyone else's tanks.

They've got their years wrong. The '73-75 and '76 tanks are different. And a '73 tank will work for a '70-71-72 with trivial plumbing changes.
