this seems to be the popular choice for a fab project. they just want so much to buy one though. some shots of the one i built. sorry about it not being clean

What kind of latch is that on there? I can't figure out how it works from the pics.

 

its an over center type latch. its what i would recomend. the tension can be adjusted on it to make sure it does not rattle, and its fast and easy to use.

basicly the u shaped part hooks in to the part on the square post that you can see. when you push on the red handle, it gets hard as you are pushing that pin that the u part is bolted to thru an arc. as you get "over cente" the tension from the u part snaps it closed and holds it there.

What did you use for the gas can holder? It looks like some sheet bent up on 4 sides. I had been trying to figger a way to get the gas can incorporated into my design, but time was against me and I had to get it done ASAP. Later on, I'll add that and other things.

And don't you worry about some b@$t@rd stealing your gas can? A bungee ain't exactly the pinnacle of security...

 

oldbill you are definatly an over thinker. the holder is indeed just some sheet metel bent up on four sides. i made a template from cardboard first and then went from there. basickly i traced the bottom of the can and then added the four sides. i bent it in a vise, which wasent the greatest, a brake would do a much better job.

as for the can being stolen..... yes i do worry about it being stolen. thats why i came up with this inginous anti-theft plan. that can in the pic is just a dummy can. one of about five old millitary cans my dad had laying around. they are to rusty inside to be of any use, so i bought a brand new one for when i want to take extra gas with me. other wise its the dummy can.............they want it they can have it, and i hope if it does get taken that they try and use it as well, can we pluged fuel filter

What did you use for the hinge?

 

i used an 1 1/4" grade eight bolt. then i found some brass bushings that fit the bolt like hey were made to. i then put the bushings into a piece of pipe and added some grease nipples.

if you look at the picture you can see that there is three nuts. one is full size, the other is cut in half. one of the half nuts goes under the bottom bushing and this one is used to preload the hinge. then the bolt goes thru the bumper mount where the full nut is used to attach it to the bumper, and lastly the other half nut is used as a jam nut to keep it tight. K.I.S.S.

 

You could even do one step further, put in about a half gallon of stale gas with a whole buncha used oil and some water. Just tell your friends not to use it! :twisted:

 

I am thinking of the same thing, but just planned on turning the can upside down, welding a small steel plate on the bottom of the can. On that plate will be a steel Rod that sticks down through the carrier. Through that rod will be a hole for a padlock.
sounds more complicated than it is, but if nothing else, it'll keep honest people honest. I'll probably only keep it on there when I think I'll need it.....trails and such...
