When did the fuel tank go from under the seat to under the tub?

Hi, I have a rusty 69 that I picked up a fiberglass tub for, I don't want to have the tank under the seat when I'm done, something about sitting directly over a bomb that makes my cheeks clench up..lol. If I'm to relocate what year do I have to look at?

Mid 1970 they switched the to the rear. If you do a search you'll find lots of info on this swap.
It's pretty easy if you use the 71-later parts.

Personally I, by far, prefer the tank under the seat - in my experience the one in back constantly hits stuff and hangs up

yea if someone hits you hard enough to rupture the tank under you your gonna be hurtin anyway

 

Yeah, if you get hit on the driver's side hard enough to rupture the tank you are pretty much toast anyway. However, it is common to get fuel fumes in the cab with the under seat tank.

Not if you don't have a cab. Mine is a bikini top, year round. Lots a fresh air! Or smog, or whatever passes for what we are breathing now days.

 

My 1971 CJ5 has the tank at the rear, it started in 1970.
But if you have a problem with the tank it is easier to repair it under the seat. At the rear, it is really complex.

 

The only time I had a fuel smell in my 62 was when the tank got a hole in it. Otherwise, there is no fuel smell. The filler and the outlet at the bottom are both outside the cab.

I prefer mine under the seat. Never bottom out on it, not exposed to any danger when wheeling.

 

We worry about "sitting on a bomb" but have no trouble hanging 2 five gallon cans on the rear tire carrier? I recently replaced my under the seat tank, added a non-vented gas cap and tip over valve. No gas stink but still limited in fuel capacity.

 

Same here, I’ll live with the fumes.
Besides when I put my Waggy axles in I planned on extending the rear axle back a couple of inches and a rear tank would get in the way.

 

My '70 CJ5 has a rear tank. My '69 has the seat tank.

Relocated mine to rear, more or less as boyink outlined. Not due to fear of gasoline under my *** (like chuck said, think about riding a bike), but because I didn't have a very tight tank to begin with. Put a lock box under the seat instead.

 

My 71 has both tanks, one under the seat and one in the rear.

I'm wondering if a PO mosified it. If so it's well done, because it looks like original equipment. The only problem was that I had to remove the return fuel line to the rear tank, because when using the under seat tank, fuel would get returened to the rear tank. A couple of times I inadevertantly was running the front tank with the rear tank full, and thus the return flow caused the rear tank to overflow.

Does anyone know if dual tanks were a factory option?

 

Dual tanks were not a factory option-but it's possible to add the additional tank with factory style parts, so if it's well done, it would appear stock.
I have the same problem with the return lines-you need to go with a 6 way switching valve, so the fuel returns to the tank you're running on.

 

Yes, dual tanks were never an option. But it was a popular upgrade in the day. I put an under seat tank in my '73 CJ-5 (long ago), using the factory parts. I used a manual 3-way switch on the floor to switch between the tanks.

It's possible to run three tanks - one under each seat, and one in the back. MTS sells an under-seat tank for the passenger side, that is a mirror image of the driver's side tank. You have to remove the tool box to run the passenger side tank.

There are manual 6-way valves available from boat supply stores that could be used to switch the return line along with the feed line. They are expensive though - and the electric 6-way valve is less expensive. It's also possible to use 2 3-way valves, and switch them both - either manually or using some kind of mechanical linkage.

Setting up the under-seat tanks for vapor recovery is also problematic, if that's an issue. Vapor recovery has some advantages - it would let you seal the gas cap and reduce or eliminate the stinky characteristic of the under-seat tanks.

 

Someone sometime put an electric fuel pump right next to the seat and a rubber hose accross the floor, through the firewall to the carb.. That's what made me think about relocation, but the points are well taken to keep it inside. BTW I ride a 58 Duo Glide with the gas "between the boys".. never thought about it before.
