Idea For Side Steps?

I have been thinking about a idea for installing side steps on my jeep. The original style steps are the type that will get bent up and damaged. I was thinking about a flexible rubber step like on a service truck that will fold up and not get damaged. Maybe making a set would be cheaper than buy a set of these.

I guess my feeling is that a step on a Jeep needs to extend more outside of the body to be usable. I could be wrong.

 

I would agree with Pete. But to prove it for yourself, get a step stool, bucket, cinder blocks or whatever and place them on the ground but to the inside of the jeep and see how it works for you getting in and out, because that's what matters.

 

I had made some out of chain and a piece of rod. They were about as useful as a poke in the eye from a sharp stick...

Like Pete said, they need to extend out past the body to be useable.

Possible. I imagine that the wobbly nature of a rubber mounted step requires somewhere to hold on with your hands.

 

I made stirrups out of 1" X 1" box tube for my Jeep mounted just under the rocked panel , seemed OK until you try to turn and sit in the Jeep, you had to turn your leg in a 180* position and that was not easy or good. I found a set of re-popped Jeep steps, they work a lot better, you can step up and spin around on the step and sit in the Jeep. My Jeep with a 1" lift has never hit the steps on the ground, but we don't have rocks in my area just sand roads. Good luck

 

Where did you get the steps? I’m going to need some. 2.5” lift and 33s make it hard on me and my wife wants to bring the shop steps.

 

Built my own. It's 3 in 1.
It is a step, used every time I enter.
It is a , attached to frame body mount, reduces frame flex.
It is a tree bar, tapered front and rear, same width as outside of tires.
Made from 1in square scrap steel, covered with riveted on tread plate.

 

Not original but what came on my cj5. Have to zoom in. They work very well, do not hang down low to get hung up. Clean look.

I've always refrained from steps knowing no matter what I put there it would no longer be residing at that location after the first trail ride-----------------------

 

I built sliders with a 2inch flat at a 90 to the bottom edge tapered on each end just enough to hop in with.

 

I forgot about this guy on one of the FB Jeep pages who is selling steps. I ordered a set today for $150 plus $30 shipping. I'll wait to see how how the purchase works out before I tell any more.

 

These steps are made by knapheide truck equipment. I wonder how thick the rubber is on these mounts? They look easy to make. Maybe even a trip to the junkyard might find a set.

 

I got these about 2 years ago off ebay. Someone on the site posted pictures of theirs, and i searched around and found them.
They are stainless and were around $20 a piece. If i can find a link i will post it. i think the were called Bus steps.

 

I got mine from a Guy that goes to the same shows I go to with our Car Club. He has a Beautiful 58 C J 3 B, that is all tricked out, but close to stock. It has the F head motor and stock drive train, but wild off road seats and four point seat belts, Roll Bar, just a wild bright Yellow C J 3 B. Any way he bought the re-popped steps and didn't care for them, so he bought a set of "High End" fancy steps and sold me the re-popped ones for $10.00. They are the ones with the bubble bumps on them.Yes, that's my beer in the shadow.

 

Used on school buses and firetrucks.

Are they satisfactory to use?

 

I've been happy with them.they are wide enough to be usable, they don't rattle and haven't rusted. i wasn't to thrilled
about drilling the tub to mount them, but the fiberglass tub i used sits higher on the frame than my old tub, and the
seats i have now, plus my growing girth forced me to do something. Wish i was younger when i had more spring in my step.

 

The late '70s E-One firetruck at my old volunteer station had the stainless steps that Krawler has. They were used to climb up into the rear hose bed and worked well for that application. They folded fairly flat, so I would think work well if you could mount then low enough to be useful on a Jeep.
