Intermediate Fuel Tank Questions

    Ok, I screwed up big time and now I need to repair/replace the center fuel tank strap on my CJ. Looking at it, I'm kinda puzzled. Can I drop just the skid plate or will the tank also drop out when I unbolt the skid plate?

    If I could unbolt the skid plate and then the center strap that would be just a bucket of bacon-wrapped awesomeness.

    If your asking about the 73 in your sig, I doubt there is a strap. Unbolt the skid plate and see.. My 75 has one bolt in the front of the tank as I recall and two in the rear.. The rear ones are hard to reach, but it can be done.. The skid plate is mounted seperately, and is also a pain to re-install..

    On an intermediate, the skid plate does not support the tank. That came in 1976. There's no strap - the tank bolts to the frame with a bracket.

    Remove the skid plate and the tank stays put.

    IIRC your skid should have four screws across the back flange that go into the rear crossmember. The front of the skid is attached by two brackets that drop down from the tub and have two bolts each on the diagonal.

    then you can drop the skid independantly from the tank. The tank is then held in place with that "s" shaped mount to the tank tab in front , and two bolts in the rear corner where the tank rests on two "L" brackets.

    Unless he has an aftermarket plastic tank. An MTS poly tank has to be attached to an intermediate's skid in a similar fashion to a later CJ stock tank. If that is the case, he may have a strap, and both tank and skid will come down together

    No poly tank, it looks very much like the original steel tank.

    What really has me confused is DREDnot's photo. My Jeep has everything shown, but it also has about a 1-1/2" wide strap that runs from that big bolt on the center bracket, under the tank and back up to the rear cross member. It looks like something a PO fabbed up, not OEM.

    I was just looking for some assurance that my tank wasn't going to fall out when I unbolt the skid plate. Looks like I'm going to ahve to investigate this a little deeper.

    DREDnot's picture is exactly what the factory supplied... the rear skid plate was on the option list before 1976. The base vehicle came without it.

    Yes Sir, my 72' has two bolts at rear to frame with tank sitting on the ledge and in front center of tank.

    my 74 looks like the same set up but I've got two brackets on the front edge . built my own skid that attaches bout the same way,no straps...

    The poly tank I bought for my '72 had the OEM mounting holes just like the original.......Not a bad idea though to add a strap under the tank. Its just 3 little ears that hold it up...I may strap mine as well for some self insurance.
