1978 Cj-5 Front Fenders On A 1967 Cj-5?

On my '67 CJ-5, the front fenders have been repaired very poorly and I have a chance to purchase a new set of '78 front CJ-5 fenders for a good price.

I found out that the '78 fenders "may" be longer, but don't know much more than that. Also, they have the side markers that my '67 does not have, not a big deal there though.

I'd much rather modify new fenders than repair these old rusty ones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They will not fit, much to long. You must have fenders for a 71 and back.

yep 3 inches longer at tub to lower fender lip
and maybe little different on inner fender shape
not saying it's not impossible to rework
but that all depends on your skill and time

 

Without paying tons of $$$$ '71/earlier front fenders, I'm still looking at these brand new '72 and later CJ-5 front fenders.

Is the only difference in the '71 and the '72 behind the wheel opening? Or are they completely shaped differently up front too?

I can see cutting off the back few inches and welding the rear bolt flange back on and still be done quickly and at $125 for the pair of new '72 front fenders, it may be worth the effort... IF THE ONLY DIFFERNCE IS BEHIND THE WHEEL OPENING...

‘72 will have marker light indents if that matters to you. Shock mount location in the inner fender is probably different. If these are aftermarket replacement fenders be aware there are some really bad quality ones out there. I had a set and one was longer than the other, both drooped, bolt holes were not in correct spots, etc.
Price is attractive but I’d check them over carefully before spending money. If they are that cheap, there is probably a reason.

 

Sometimes buying the wrong parts because they seem cheap can end up costing more than the right parts.

 

I found a pair of older factory fenders, without marker lights, that had been in a fire bought them for cheap. When I started cleaning them up, I realized that had lost their hardness from being pressed. They were soft, they were hard to work with, when working on them I decided to use the offshore replacement fenders that my friend put on it years ago when he redone it. I filled in the marker lights, and cut the inner fenders out of the factory fenders and welded them into the offshore fender so everything was just like stock. The stock fenders had stronger inner fenders than the offshore replacement fenders. I still have one of the fire fenders just in case I need it. Good Luck.

 

DJ-5 Postal Jeep fenders are the correct length for an early CJ. Just have marker indents and a few random holes to fill in. That's what I currently have on my 66 CJ-6
