X2....upgrade your distributor and I bet the problem disappears. Been there!

ok, sorry for the absence work has been rough....anyways I think i will go as some has suggested and just gut the distributor and go to electronic. Ive thought for a while on HEI vs the TFI upgrade and i think im going to go HEI since i like to do more offroading then street use and from what i have read its seems the HEI is less susceptible to water, and the ease of just a one wire system is also nice. Am i wrong on that? i have seen about a 50/50 spilt on the opinions of either system so i dont think either can be wrong. what do you all think?

you can try this.. there should be a ported vac line and a manifold vac line on your carb. on my carb (650 holley) the ported vac is on passenger side of the front mettering block, and the manifold vac line is in front side of carb under the float bowl.
I had pluged my distributor vac line to the ported and it ran like crap, started off ok but after a few mins driving it, it went south. I switched them around to manifold vac and the prob went away. the ported vac increases vac at idle, dont know how this affected the engine at highter than idle rpms but it seemed too. maybe when your dad put the dis in her pluged into the wrong port at the carb. just a thought. good luck.

    nickmil In mothballs.

That's backwards. Manifold vacuum increases at idle with the throttle plates closed and ported vacuum decreases due to less air flow. Ported vacuum increases as the throttle plates open and engine rpm increases due to the airflow through the throttle body. This is what you want the distributor vacuum advance hooked to as you want the ignition to advance as engine rpm increases.

Are you sure nick, you may be right though. I could have swore that I read that because of their attempts to add smog restrictions that it made the idles poor and they went to ported vac to increase the vac. I may have it backwards though.
    Was a thought

haha not fishing....just having problems. Got the dizzy in, got her to tdc, noted the rotor put the cap on put the cables one starting with #1 were the rotor was pointing, then following the firing order clockwise intsalled rest of wires. Tried to start it and it just wont idle, it will catch for a second then backfire or upfire through the carb and die.

i used to think i was ok at standard car mechanics but this jeep is humbling me quick...

sounds like timing is off sure the engine was at tdc on the compression stroke? try loosing the hold down and turn dist both ways while trying to start if you're off by one tooth you can usually get enough twist on the dist to get fire...

    Probably 180° out

by 180 out do you mean im on the exhaust stroke not the compression stroke?

you know what, i did get tdc twice, i made sure of compression stroke the first time but i had mixed up the firing order (i know im a bonehead). So then i re-did it all and i don't think i checked the stroke the second time...hmmmm its to late to check now but ill redo it all tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks!!

    ITS ALIVE!!!!!!

well Patrick i believe you were right.....I think it was 180 out.
I stripped it all down and started again, found TDC ON the compression cycle, made sure of it this time. Got the rotor to were it was pointing at a terminal and re attached the wires in firing order.......and VRRRROOOOOOM! got the timing light and got it to 7 degrees BTDC. Tomorrow i will take it out and see if the original problem of backfiring when warm has gone away.......i sure hope so. I think i might freak out if its still there. Thanks again for all your help everyone!!! will keep you posted tomorrow on what happens.

well great news, drove for 2 hours after work today and the problem is gone. Ran strong with no stalling or back firing. Something must have been wrong in either the distributor or coil.

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!!!
