Dana 27 Gears

I've got a 70 CJ5 with the stock Dana 27 Front/Dana 44 rear, mine came with 3.73's, but I've added some rather taller tires to it (Appx 33") and consequently, I think my final drive ratio is now closer to 3.00:1.

So the question is, who out there is selling Dana 27 Ring and Pinion sets? I seem to be able to find 4.27:1 kits fairly easily, but I'm more interested in some 4.56 or 4.88 gears, with the tires being so tall, and the planned addition of an overdrive.....

Dana 44 gears aren't a problem, it's just the 27 that's not showing up with many options....

Iirc Randys only offers 4.27's for the 27 and they are crazy expensive. Just not enough call for aftermarket gears for that diff. Forget 4.56 for the 27. 4.88 were an option and come up occasionally. Might try the usual sources in the where to buy parts section. I'll be up at R&P tomorrow and can see if they have some.

Some food for thought - I had a real hard time finding 4.88s for a D27, so at the time it ended up being cheaper to get a D30 and put 4.88s in it. It's a mostly bolt on swap if you go NT and can get disk brakes as well. Some areas it's harder to find NT D30s so it will depend.

Yeah, not alot of Donor Jeeps out here that I've run across, but that is an option I'm looking at, I'm really just putting plans together at the moment so I can start budgeting out some money for parts.

Paul at R&P has a pretty nice set of 4.88 for a 27 on the shelf. He said $100. He can be reached at 503-557-8911
I was up there today and took a look at them

As you are finding out the 4:88's for the D27 are getting hard to find.
I have had really good dealings with R&P, good guys.

I have a 63 with a D27 up front and I am 80% sure that mine came stock with 5:38s. Maybe that might help with your 33 in tires

Does anyone know if the 4.88 gears from a rear D23-2 will bolt into a D27? I thought I read somewhere they shared the same r&p. If they do, I may be able to help out, and will post an ad in the classifieds.

27 is different. I believe a 25 is the same.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but my D27 is in the front, which I think means they reverse cut the gears, a set intended for the rear won't work "properly" in a front diff, I don't think. Unless they just swap the side the pinion is on front to rear, which would basically reverse the cut.....

Not the way it works. In low pinion or "standard cut" fronts where the drive pinion is below the center line all the factory did was take a rear and turn it around and use it in the front. You are then driving on the coast side of the ring gear instead of the drive side. High pinion or "reverse cut" diffs have the drive pinion above the center line and those do take a special set of gears that are cut reversed from the rears so when used in a front application you are driving on the drive side of the gear when moving forward. Many Wranglers, XJ and MJ's (Cherokees and Commanches) and many Ford trucks used high pinion front diffs. Our Jeeps never did so a ring and pinion from a rear 27, say a Scout 80 or a 25 ring and pinion from a 23-2 can be used in a 27 or 25 front respectively.

Ok, that makes sense, I honestly hadn't looked into it *that* closely, and haven't ever done gears in a Jeep before, lots of Ford Pickups, and lots of underground mining equipment, and the ones I've dealt with have always been reverse cut in the front.....

Good to know though, learn something new everyday.

I learn something every day. All the years I've been around Jeeps and I've never even heard of a D23.

23-2 is basically a rear 25 that was full float used in Mb's, Gpw's, and very early 2a's.

Thanks for the heads-up Nick. I'm obviously not really that familiar with the early military Jeeps.

Will the carrier from a D27 swap into a D25, and vice versa? And if so, will the carrier and gears from a D23 swap into a D27? I'd just give this thing away if the OP is interested. Just trying to help out, I have no use for the D23 Rear-end.

The differential CASE (the part the ring gear bolts to) will not swap between the 25 and 27. The CASE from the 23-2 will not swap into the 27. If you want to sell it might try G-503.com as they are military resto people and may very well be interested. Do NOT scrap it please as original parts for these are getting harder to come by. Oh, and thanks for trying to help out!
