aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

Ok, this should be the last post here before I switch over to a build theread. But for the sake of continunity, I'm keeping this here.

I got the whole windshield apart tonight. The little ball and socket joint is actually a peg that goes through the center divider and out the front, then a little nut then a brass cap nut. I removed the brass cap nut, reched around to the ball and socket joint and grabbed it with pliers, and twisted off the little 5/16 nut that was tight to the front of the windshield. This freed the ball and socket peg that went from the rear view mirror, through the "T", through the center divider, and out the front. Then I removed the peg and with the side nuts and bolts removed (holding the connecter plates) the bottom of the inner frame came sliding out with very little effort.

(I'm trying to like a little pict, not a full size one)

This is the backside of the peg showing the ball and socket and the "T".

This is the frontside of the windshield, showing the other side of the peg with the center divider, the 5/16 nut and the brass cap nut.

The next thing was to remove the inner frame from the outter frame. This took a week of daily soaking with PB Blaster and a lot of wiggling. Eventually (tonight once the glass was out the only thing was the top of the inner frame) I could grab it enough to wiggle it while sliding. It moved a tiny bit, and a tiny bit more. About 30 min later I had wiggled it with side pressure enough to get it out. FYI, you have to remove the wiper motors before removing the inner frame.

Now it gets sandblasted, holes filled, pits filled, primmed and painted, rerubbered, glassed and good as new:)

Thanks for all the help. I hope the next person who does this finds this thread.

And rondog, the brackets are not for a soft door. At least I don't think so. I have a set of brackets for an M38a1 soft door. They attach to the frame edge, not the backside of the front. But maybe an aftermarket top or something? Still a mystery.....

First of all a big shout out to everyone. Have not been on here in awhile and posted something. Better late than never I suppose.

It looks like you got her all apart finally. But here is another set of pics of mine. Maybe some "hole" questions will get answered. I am not sure if you are going to do the work yourself on the resto of your frame, but I have one piece of advice. Are you going to sandblast and then have someone do the prepping and painting? If so I highly recommend going to the same person, it will be cheaper in the long run instead of trying to find the cheapest sandblaster and "body work" and painting. Also, the swing out arms are the same as a 5 ton windshield on saturn surplus as well as the little tabs for the windshield latches. The windshield latches are hit and miss with military surplus. I ended up getting one that was exact and one that was different. The arms are about 8 bucks, the latches are 6 ish, and the brackets are a couple bucks if memory serves me right. Not bad for new.

Hey Kevin! Good to hear from ya! How you doin' over there? Hope you're staying safe! Don't wanna hear any more stories like that one you told me about the tail rotor.

How is the glass held into the frame? Is there a seal like the regular one piece frames or is it something else?

Yeah, there's a special rubber seal for that inner frame, which seals against the outer frame. I'm not sure if that also mounts the glass into the inner frame or not. AFAIK, this guy here has the only new seals in existence, I bought one from him a few years ago and have it stashed away, waiting until I rebuild my vws. http://www.debellajeepparts.com/ You'll need to call him, I seriously doubt it's listed on his website.

The special rubber seal fits into the groove along the outer edge of the flip-out frame that holds the glass. It does not hold the glass; that is done with another seal. I had glass cut and slid it in myself. The inner seal is just thin strips of rubber on either side of the glass, between the glass and the groove on the inside of the flip-out frame.

I also got both the frame and the outer rubber seal from Debella's.

My v/ws doesn't have the divider in the center. I don't know it it was made that way, or if someone modified it. It doesn't look like there was ever a divider there.

I do not understand the love of the vent windshield! The air they let in is wonderful, but the view out of them is horrible.

Everyone's boat floats a bit different I guess.

If it's any help, here are some recent pictures of mine. If you need more, I can easily take them, just let me know.

The shipping of one of these seems to me like would be more than they are worth.

The vented WS is kinda like Jeeps as a whole. They are loud, rough, slow, noisy, cold, hot, etc. But that is why they are so cool. Yes, the w/s is a bit harder to see out of but they have a high cool factor.

The way I got mine was a stroke of luck. I went to see this guy about a grill and fender, (which were the wrong kind), and he had that w/s on a CJ6 he was building. He was pretty tall, and was grousing about how he couldn't see out of it. I was grousing about how much I'd like to have one, and he suggested we trade. So, we did! Even up.

You probably don't like those ridiculous PTO's or a 3 point hitches or a governor either!:)

So if I'm understanding it correctly, the rubber that seals the glass in is nothing special and could just be made from some flat rubber gasket material or silicone? Can someone take some pictures or confirm this?

The glass in mine had smooth edges (ground smooth) and had a heavy rubber material around it. No silicon, and I would assume it leaked in a good rain when it was new.

Kinda like a thin stip of electrical tape on the edge.......

Well, 60%. I've seen a 3 point hitch on a tractor. I haven't seen one on a Jeep so I'm not sure. I don't have a governor, but I did have a cruise control for a while. Most of it's still on the Jeep, but I don't drive many miles down the highway any more, so I don't use it.

The PTO is another matter. Back in the late 60s I bought a Rhino winch. It was a Japanese copy of a Warn 8000 lb winch. The PTO wasn't much to write home about as it leaked oil even worse than the transfer case. The dealer I bought it from finally replaced it with a Koenig dual PTO and it's worked just fine ever since. There was even room for the winch and a Power Steering up front. There wasn't much extra room I can say!

Make a glass frame, hinges, a latch and a seal for your main frame, shouldn't be too bad to make out of an existing frame. if you have a welder you can do it. i've considered it.

I considered making an inner frame but found it would be better just to wait for one to come up for sale. The inner is actually tubing bent into a "H" shaped cross section with lips on the outer edge to hold the outer seal. There is h shaped extruded aluminum channel out there but I wouldn't want to try to form the corners.

I'd swear that pictures 3,4,and 5 from way back when in this posting were taken on my flatbed trailer next to my barn. I know I had a vent windshield that looked like that; with the 'art deco' glass -- if I recall correctly I got it from a barn in Indiana. But I thought I had traded it to a guy in Ohio. Maybe I'm wrong, but it would be surprising that somewhere else there would be a barn, gravel, and trailer exactly like mine.

At any rate it sure looks good now...

Yup, I kinda recall that I got those from somebody on here- that would have been back before I found mine when I was still thinking about building an inner frame & was looking for details. That's actually the reason I joined here- I was on willys tech looking for an inner frame & Thad (Old Bill) told me to try here :)

    I suddenly feel old :(

I finally got one on EBay, NO Barn S from a guy in Boston, photos 6 & 7
