CJ5 Ventilating Windshield

I have an opportunity to buy a Ventilating Windshield for my CJ6. They guy wants around $600. I know these are difficult to find, but is it worth the $600 asking price? Obviously it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay, so without the flaming. . . what do you think a Ventilating windshield in good working condition is worth?

 

How tall are you? I am somewhat long waisted and look out of the top third of the windshield. A venting one would not work for me no matter the cost. Do you have a hardtop? I would think that is where those windscreens would shine. With a soft top just fold the windshield down and eat some bugs. Are you looking to use it or resell hopefully for a profit?

 

They are scarce... I think you'd have a hard time finding one if you wanted to replace it. But - my guess - it would take a while to sell a ventilating windshield for that price. Not a big market. I presume all the seals are in good shape, and the glass is not broken or fogged.

Also, the divided windshield will impair your forward vision to some degree. That plus the smaller glass area reduces safety. Divided windshields were eliminated because the bar can obstruct your vision.

If you wanted it for the ventilation, I think you could fit some floor vents (did the Postals have these?) and get the same amount of air as you'd get from the windshield.

They are interesting, but I think few owners would spend that much to have one, considering their drawbacks.

 

It would be going on my 1963 CJ6. It is pretty much a summer vehicle, so the top is usually off when it's driven. I am attempting to put this thing back to as close to stock as possible. I have already replaced the wheels with factory kelsey-hayes and NDT's, and am working on the Longitudinal Rear Seats presently and will be ditching the roll bar/cage. I am going for the export look for this thing, and I think that the ventilator windshield would be the perfect addition. Having said that, what do you think?

 

Very nice '6 you have there. I think a ventilating windshield would look great on there.

To pay $600 for one it would have to be in mint condition shape, no rust, decent paint, good glass, seals, etc. and be complete. Otherwise that's too much money. I would say for a decent used one in the $300-$500 range wouldn't be out of the question for one that just needs repainted or seals/gaskets replaced.

I've got one I intend on restoring. I bought it about 12 or so years ago at a swap meet. I looked for 5 years for a decent one (they are real scarce in my area) and paid $275 for it. Had a guy offer me $350 for it as I was carrying it away. It's in pretty nice shape, but has one cracked glass and needs repainting.

Like was said, they are scarce, but you have to find the right type of person that wants one too.

Might try and talk the person down in price. If it's pristine, then it might be ok at that price.

 

Still looking after 3 years... Yes, I'm jealous! FWIW, I've seen them advertised for $700 plus... not saying I wouldn't (want) to pay it; but it had better be perfect!

 

I have a vented ws I'm restoring. I can tell you just new seals will run $100-$150. If the seal on the inner frame is bad the only place you can get them is Peter Debella.

Were it me and I found one I could just pop on and go for 6 bills, I'd go that route. The bare frame, NOS at Peter Debellas was $750 last I checked.......

I can't agree more. I have one, and it hasn't been on my Jeep for over 30 years. The view out of these things are terrible! I'm about 6ft tall and all I could see was the bottom of the windshield wiper motors. I mashed up my Jeep in 69, so I bought a new windshield along with other parts. It was a 69 model windshield with the big glass and low windshield wipers. I loved it! I could see out! The Vent windshield has never been back on the Jeep.

I have some low vent doors for my feet and a bikini top, so I don't miss the air from the vent windshield.

Don't ask how I know this, but the vent windshield isn't very good for hunting rabbits. You don't want to open the windshield and shoot your pistol through the opening. Recoil, you know. (I was only 26 then)

 

I can't think of a good reason for ditching the roll bar.

 

Longitudinal seats in the rear wont fit with the rollbar!

 

All I would say is be very carefull of the rust. Mine came with one and looked good but when I got into it... looked like it was going to be alot of work to restore.
Is the whole frame and opening part for sale. I only ask as my frame has a welded on hindge and without it the opening glass part would have no place to mount. There are also the side brackets that hold the window open. ( I don't have a cj without the opening window to compare so maybe the welded hinge is on all stock frames?)
