My New Hub Puller

    Just picked this up from Mac tools today. Should get the job done.

    That's a nice puller set. It won't pull the tapered axle hubs off the rear axle though, if that's what you were wanting.

    X3. Bought a similar kit from Cornwell that came with more adapters. Great for pulling shafts out, bearings off, etc. but not so good for tapered axles. I use mine most commonly for pulling the pilot bearings out of the rear outputs of Dana 300 transfer cases.

    I also have the sockets for for the tapered axle I just didn't put a pic of them up.

    Doesn't matter. A slide hammer won't touch those hubs.

    This isn't my first rodeo Patrick. That puller is identical to my brothers and I used it to pull off way worse than what I have now.

    Okay. I'm just going on my personal experience for the last 20 years, and every other person on this forum who has removed those hubs. Good luck.

    If you get a tough one, use that style puller and pull the whole axle out with the hub on. Then a nice big shop press is your friend. Might as well press on new axle bearings while you're at it, and new axle seals, etc etc. BTDT, before I got my vintage Blue Point puller.

    I borrowed my brothers press tool for that exact reason. You can press out ball joints, bearings, and just about anything with it really and it is totally safe to use. I will get a pic of it tomorrow.


    Patrick, I know where your coming from and I am grateful for it I really am.




    Has anyone on here seen the picture in the original service manual for the hub puller?

    It is a circular pattern and fits over the entire drum. It would be bad *** if you could get Mac or Snap-On to remake that hub puller and all the other service tools for that time period.

    That's what mine looks like too. Pretty much required if working on tapered axles unless you get very very lucky.

    If you have a flanged axle then the puller set you have will work fine for pulling the axle from the housing. Tapered axle is a different beast to take apart.

    I am no pro but I have taken apart two or three tapered axle 44's and there is no way that puller/slide hammer would have taken mine apart. The last one I did bent up the type of puller shown above that you fastne to the lug nuts and hit with a large hammer.

    My puller looks like Patrick's also but is an OTC unit. I have had a few that there would have been absolutely no hope using a slide hammer.

    even with that and a torch it took a half hour on each hub.

    Mine is the same worked great bought a yard sale 4 bucks!!!! Screwed it down and hit the drum 3lb hammer and done i guess it depends how long ur jeep was sitting and how long its been since brake job lol

    You can also make a puller out of an old front hub by welding a plate and nut on the top to run a large bolt through. You can then bolt all 5 lugs down and they pop off pretty good ('course we have a 3/4 drive set that helps too).

    agree, you need the puller that you hit with a sludge hammer to get those rear hubs off. if you can get them off with a slide hammer than they wernt put on tight in the first place. lets see, i think there torqued to about 250 ft lbs originally. any way even with the right puller there hard to get off, or at least there suppose to be hard to get off. ive used mine more than a couple of times to do mine and a friends hubs.
