    Getting to know my new toy. Service Manual says I have the Dana 18 transfer case, but says the shift patter is 2H-4H-N-4L. Mine though is 2H-N-4H-4L. Perhaps the PO swapped in a different Transfer Case? Perhas it was rebuilt and somehow changed the pattern? What is the best way to identify what I have. 1968 CJ5 v-6 T-14A 3speed. Looks and smells like a Dana 18, but...Thanks:?

    A dana 18 has both drive shafts running down the passenger side in line with each other. The dana 20 has the rear in line with the engine and the front driveshaft going down the passenger side.

    Seems unlikely that 2H and 4H would not be next to each other. This would prevent you from shifting 2WD-4WD and back on the fly, because you'd have to go through neutral to shift. The free-wheeling in neutral would make the gears clash when you try to shift through it.

    What would it be for the single lever transfer case?

    I have the two lever model with 2 + 4 on the lever next toe the gear selector and 4lo + N + 4Hi on the other, situated front to rear. On the D18 transfer case.

    Or am I misunderstanding the whole thing?:D:hurrican:

    He has the single lever transfer case. CJ's equipped with the V-6, T-14, and model 18 transfer case normally had a single lever to operate the transfer case.

    On that one isn't the neutral between the 2H and 4H?

    Mine is 2H all the way forward, then N-4H-4L.

    JC588-Thanks, for confirming someone else has the same shift pattern. I was beginning to think mine was messed up somehow. It does seem strange that our shift patterns don't match what the diagram shows, and that 2H and 4H are not next to each other. Does anyone know why?

    Scotter270 & jc588;
    Can you guys take pictures of your shift linkage connections and share them here?
    Either crawl underneath and take a picture looking up or maybe from on top with the tranny tunnel removed. A picture with the linkage in each of the four positions would be helpful.

    Does your TC and shifter look like this?

    If so you should check again. The single stick D18 was 2H-4H-N-4L from the firewall out. If it doesn't look like this you have another TC. In that case a picture would help.:v6:

    GrannysCJ- Your Pic is what I have in terms of TC-I have the T14A Tranny though, PTO, & Overdrive (certainly not as clean & shiney, but I just got it a couple months ago :D ). I don't have digital camera to take pictures. Perhaps it was rebuilt and put together wrong? It works fine and all.

    The transmission in the pic is the T-14 transmission. It's possible the linkage was assembled wrong but I wouldn't think it would shift through all the gears if that were the case. The PTO and overdrive won't change the shift pattern on the transfer case. I've got one at home I can double check the shift pattern on.

    Nothing should be different. I don't think you can make the linkage work if it isn't connected properly and the OD and PTO doesn't effect shifting at all. The distance the shifter moves for 4H is minimal, you may be missing it.:v6:

    Sorry for making a false statement guys, I checked and my transfer case has 2H & 4H together. 2H-4H-N-4L, Guess I need to get a little more familiar with my equipment.

    No problem, that's what we are about, helping each other out:beer:. I checked my daughter's '70 tonight and that's what the shift pattern was.
