So, last night, as i prepare for the brown santa's arrival....with my bellcrank and draglink kit, i decided to tear open the Ross box, just to check out what its like...pull the bottom bolt on the cover and out comes about a quart of water..ugh. get it open, and there is a little slidge that used to be gear oil, and the rest, it seems was filled with water....ross box has now been sprayed with wd40 and is awaiting a better cleaning...do you guys think i need to pull it off the frame and fully dissassemble? Here are pics....

I actually just took mine apart and am in the middle of rebuilding. (ruined a sector shaft bushing in the process so im on hold till tomorrow)
I took some great pictures and will get them up this weekend..
IMO.. for the time and effort, and how easy it is, I would pull it and go through it.

Yep. More war wounds tonight, i think im done for the evening.... here's tonights timeline....

Removed where TRE fits into bell crank....realized that i couldnt get the top nut off the bell crank stud, without removing radiator.

    Drained radiator

    Removed Radiator

Removed bell crank stud nut, with breaker bar and socket....

sliced thumb open on brake pressure switch when nut broke free. cleaned and bandaged wound.

dropped bell crank and front drag link assmbley down - as could not tear down that end of drag link - need to soak overnight in pb blaster

laid on back and figeted with cotter pin on other end of drag link for ~30 mins

removed cotter pin and proceeded to try to figure out how to remove other end of drag link....decided on large screwdriver....slots full of sludge, so used another small screwdriver.

Jammed small screwdriver into thumb (same thumb previously injured) just behind the bandage. cleaned wound and bandaged.

used larger screwdriver to turn out drag link adjuster (name??).

removed drag link and bellcrank assmbley.

Began to use brass punch and hammer to remove the needle bearing races, smashed thumb (yes, same thumb) with hammer.

placed drag link and bellcrank assembly, into small tub and coated with pb blaster, came inside and washed hands - wrote timeline of events for all to see.

i think its time for a

Ok, i said i wasnt going to work on the jeep tonight, but i lied. I cleaned up the bellcrank, actually punched out the old bearing races....tomorrow comes draglink and reassembley!

Ok, after a lot of fidgiting, and thinking, i finally got the steering all back together...fender back on, rad. in and filled...went for a drive- the steering is nice and tight! one thing i noticed though.....my steering column seems to be bent =(. its kinda hard to turn, and while i had it apart, i spun the wheel, and there is a curve to it....guess ill have to get another....

So, tonight, i decided on the color...was at the local tractor supply ("D&B")....saw a gal. can and some color samples....think im gonna go with IH white... its an offwhite.... and, not to copy patrick, a stripe on the hood...but instead of red, it will be olive drab....flat......and the wheels will be olive drab, and i want to make some cool rock sliders....in that same color.... i dunno... hope it will look ok :)

Judging from the photo I'd imaging he likes your winch even more (at least he probably did at that moment). :)

It's almost out there. We had my Dad's winch on it, too, when it was on it's side.

So, this afternoon, i decided to pull the cover on the TC and check out the condition (also to try to stop the leak). I discovered that the PO was not exactly a student of clean surfaces = good seal..so drained it, and refilled it. Figured while i was at it, i would pull the shift tower, and check out the condition of the tranny.... Looks pretty good! Gears all in good shape, and this is after i refilled the tranny...

Well, excitment over getting the jeep closer and closer to being a real driver ended in sadness and a bit of anger this evening....angry at myself for not taking that flap disc over the entire body..... as i was casually messing with the jeep tonight, i found a bubble...on the passenger rear quarter panel....picked at it a little....found there to be nearly 1/2" of puddy on the entire rear section of the rear quarter....and of course, more rust. will post pics tomorrow.... frusterated right now...heading to bed.

    Is the tranny over full?

You'll learn to carefully check the RR of every early you look at, as they are prone to rust/ damage on that corner.

It was overfull at that point - but that was because i filled it after pulling the shift tower - i drained the tranny/tc then refilled the T/C through the fill hole - but filled the tranny through the shift tower (hence the gear oil on the gears) after i put the tower back on, i brought the level to where it was supposed to be using the fill hole.

Is the reason they rust there because of the added bracing for the spare? When i was working at getting the body filler off, i knocked the hunk of wood out of that support channel. i figure that is what caught all the water.
