transfer case or tranny problem?

Can anyone help with this problem, was going up a hill in high 4wd both front and rear ends, on dana 300 twin stick. Got to the top, went to shift out 4wd high and back into 2wd high rearend. No movement, nothing, no response from the gears. Put it back into frontend high and only the front wheels would work, limped it back down the hill. Put everything into neutral and tried again, still nothing. Limped the jeep back to the main road in 4wd high with only the front wheels. Tried one last time, 2wd high worked again. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Is this a problem with the transfer case or tranny? Any suggests or experiences?

1st question, are you sure this is a dana 300?
    Thats not stock.

I agree with Mike. '70 CJ-5 with 225 would be a T-14 and 18 transfer case. Not aware of anyone who makes an adapter for that to a 300 transfer case and even a Scout 2 "Texas pattern" 300 won't work because the input gear for a T-14 requires a 10 spline input gear and the stick Scout 2 300 used a 6 spline input gear. The 18 transfer case has an off set to passenger side rear output. All 300's have a centered rear output.

All the research about the transfercase that I can find is that this case is a dana 300. the speedo is on the right side the size of the case is right and the shift pattern for the twin stick is 2wd low, n, 2wd high and the other is frontwd low, n, frontwd high. But i have not counted the spine, i dont know for sure do to the fact this is not the one that came in for this year, is there anything else i can look at to find out and is there another case with this pattern???

nickmil said it, that would be a good place to start, does the rear drive shaft come out of the center or the pass side of the transfer

Simplest check, does the rear driveshaft run down the center of the jeep frame or is it offset to the passenger side like the front driveshaft. second check does the transfercase have a cover on the back of it that is shaped like this.

Will it come out of gear and go into gear if the vehicle is rolling barely across the ground. Do you hear gear clash when trying this?

  10. When the rear tires didn't spin was the rear driveshaft spinning?

the rear drive shaft was not spinning when i put it into 1st gear and let off the clutch( had someone in the driver seat). and we were at a complete stop. that is why i am puzzled. That is when i put the front end back into gear and that drove me down the hill.

sorry for the delay, holidays, when i get the jeep to move the first shifter is high low rear wheels and the other is the front axle low and high. if this is wrong then im lost because this is the only thing that will get my jeep to move is this. now it looks like there is an pto drive coming out of the back of the tcase. its in line with the transmission, would this not let me put the jeep back it to gear? there is no shifter to it( it may be an overdrive) i dont know? sorry for the questions but this is my first project and im just trying to understand what i have and what is wrong so that i can fix it to enjoy the jeep

think pics will help us solve this the easiest.....if it is indeed a OD it could be in neutral.........again pics top and bottom would help

Don't forget that there is a neutral position on the right shifter between low range and high range.

with the twin stick dana one shifter is high, neutral, low range
the other shifter just engages the front drive. its either in or out

the shifter to the far right from the drivers seat is low net high, high being the rear most postion.

honestly the only thing i can come up with is that it is not fully going into high range.

I agree on the pics. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words (especially if there is a question as to what you really have).
