Not usually. Depends on how tight it's shimmed.

Avoiding a carrier spreader is pretty easy,
Use a 'Come-A-Long' between the axle tubes, strung over the pinion yoke.
You can easily get the clearance you need like that, but be careful not to OVER EXTEND the housing, you only need enough to get the carrier out.

Most times, with USED bearings in the carrier, the carrier will fall out on it's own without spreading housing at all.

Pop the carrier, hammer the old seals INWARD,
    And install your new ones.

As cheap as they are, there isn't any reason NOT to change them when you are servicing the rest of the axle.

The most OVERLOOKED part of the front, besides the pinion seal and inside axle seals are the SPINDLE BEARINGS & SEALS...

Almost all the Jeeps I do have the spindle bearings rusted solid or missing all together...
And when the seals are shot in the spindle,
Water has direct access to your wheel bearings and hubs!

Just an observation from a 'Jeep Junky'...

I always just make a case spreader if I need one. Just some bar stock, small square or round tube, all thread and nuts, it's real easy. If the preload is set properly you will need one. Still can't add a picture but you just weld a half inch of the tubing at both ends, same side of the bar stock; drill holes to mount to housing, cut all thread to length, add nuts and you have a case spreader.:v6:

I have to disagree with the Moog. Maybe they've improved but after replacing several sets that were less than 6 months old with OEM Spicer's and not having the problem again I vote Spicer's.

By the way, I'll say it again. The part the ring gear bolts to that is under the cover that houses the differential gears is the case, not the carrier. The carrier houses the Drive Pinion, the differential case, the ring gear, etc. In the case of a Spicer 30, the carrier is the part the tubes are pressed into with rosette welds to hold them in place.

You are correct. I apologize for my inaccuracy. It's just an old habit of mine to call it a case spreader.:v6:

OH, GREAT!! I just got a set of Moogs in yesterday!!mehh
Well, I'm still gonna use them.

Nikmil, I know that the misuse of terminology must drive you crazy. I actually tried using the correct terminology in my posts (and I still screw them up, as it's new to me, too), and secretly felt awkward doing so, because most people don't use it correctly, for whatever reason.

I feel as though you are fighting a losing battle trying to correct this, as this is a long time, widely used, "injustice".:(

You got me to change, though!:tea:

Well, I opened the 2 sets of Moog upper and lower ball joints (MOOK8194T & MOOK8195T).

They were 8194T & 8195T, but they were from Falcon Steering Systems...

Before I contact The Auto Barn (the seller), does anyone know anything about this brand? Just the fact that they're NOT what I ordered doesn't give me a good feeling.

    Thanks.

If it were me, I'd send them back for the parts I ordered. Never heard of Falcon myself.

Me too. If they were represented as Moog, I'd send them back.

I'd go further. I'd ask the shipper to take them back shipping prepaid and fully refunded; if they wouldn't, I'd contact my credit card company to dispute payment.

BTW rockauto.com lists 4 or 5 different brands for these, ranging from Moog Problem Solvers ($30 and $35 lower and upper resp.) to Raybestos service grade at $4 and $9. Lots of range in price...

So, keep 'em, install 'em, and let you guys know how long they last?

That's probably not gonna happen ( no offense ). It has a zerk fitting on the bottom, which is tough to get at. The Moogs have the fitting on the side.

I'll call Moog on Monday, and find out if Falcon is a subsidiary, or what.

If they're not affiliated with Moog, they're going back.

I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks for chiming in.

I called the Autobarn today, and they said that they subbed the Falcons in place of the Moogs, because the Moogs were out of stock.

I told them that I didn't want the Falcons, so, they issued me an RGA# to send them back for a full credit. No problems.

I'm OK with that, except that I feel as though they were hoping that I wouldn't notice the difference, or that I wouldn't care if the items were not exactly what I ordered.

I've got the Moogs coming in from Rockauto.

I wouldn't like that either. I order a particular brand, and/or pay a premium, for a reason. Good to hear you'll end up whole...aside from waiting time.

If you're already got them then use them. The problems I had were on larger trucks and 4 wheel drives with typically larger tires than we run on CJ's, but it showed me the difference, at least with my experiences.

Yeah, I'm fighting a losing battle, my head is bloody, but will remain unbowedR)

Maybe I can't change the world but I can try and make a dent in my little corner of it!R)

    74CJ Jeepers Creepers

Well I installed the upper and lower ball joints and new axle u joints. All that work and it still steers like crap. I noticed as my brother in law was turning the wheel, (power steering) that the whole front axle swayed side to side at least a half and inch. The jeep came stock with manual steering. I put in the gm steering. Do you all think I need the frame to steering box support bracket?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    sounds normal to me
the relationship between the tire and the surface it's gripping control this movement, especially when the vehicle is sitting still.
also tire width and tire pressure affect this.
I'd only be concerned if I saw something moving/twisting by its self; frame rail, leaf spring, etc.
then we still have toe in, tire pressure, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, etc etc to contend with.

No, I've replaced gear box, tie rod ends repacked my wheel bearings, (replace less than 10k miles ago).
The whole axle, springs and even shocks move side to side.
The tires are 10.5 x 15. I'm going to check the toe tomorrow.
In answer to driving like crap. The jeep floats down the road, I guess would be the best way to describe it.
