Calling All power Loc Experts

    I picked up a model 25 Power Loc a while back for Tonk's front axle, a while after that I got a good deal on a new set of clutches which I plan to install.

    I've heard someplace that the amount of slip can be adjusted by changing how the various pieces of the clutch packs are assembled together. I've downloaded the service bulletin from Doc. Vern's page,

    and it's quite clear how the 25 setup is supposed to go together, however it occurs to me that on jeeps the 25 Power Loc was never offered for the front axle (so why is it in the bulletin? darned if I know :rofl:) and as such may not be the optimum setup for a front axle.

    FWIW the pack in mine wasn't assembled the same as the bulletin shows for a 25, it was more along the lines of a 44 setup.

    Q- What's the recommended setup arrangement for a front axle/mild off roading/getting un-stuck from mud setup?

    Howard,

    Typically the plates are alternated spline|tab|spline|tab, etc, giving 5 friction surfaces. This document (although for the Dana 60/70) shows how you could rearrange them to get 3 friction surfaces so it wouldn't be as aggressive. (I haven't tried this myself).

    Don't know who told you 25's weren't available with a powerlock but that's bogus. Lots of Jeeps came with them in the 25 front end, both factory and dealer installed.

    How the packs are stacked depends on a few things, how tight you want them, how many clutches your rebuild kit comes with, and how many clutches you have available to work with. Also, how many belleville springs (dished spring clutches) are available to you as well. With this info I can probably be more helpful.

    One of the old school tricks was to remove a flat clutch and add a belleville spring (dished clutch) of the same thickness to add more preload.

    On the 25 and 27 Powerlocks make sure the pinion shafts are square (straight) as it is common for them to be bent.

    The 25, 27, and 30 Powerlock's use the same clutches.
    I recommend using all steel clutches as they last much longer and don't require soaking the clutches for many hours in very smelly and pungent friction modifier before assembly. Last time I had to soak the clutches my garage smelled like that nasty stuff for over 6 months.....

    Hmmm- I did some more checking- no mention of a front axle power lock in either my FSM or '59 parts manual but there they are listed in my '67 PM

    In the rebuild kit i have two bellevilles, two of the thick plates, two of the thin plates and four of the discs, that's exactly whats called for in the bulletin and what was installed in the unit.

    What application- mudding /rock crawling/??? How'd that affect the steering?

    Hadn't thought of that:shock: I'll slap the dial indicator on there & check.

    The clutches in the unit and in the kit are steel. Actually the clutches that were in the unit don't look too bad (not that I really know what to look for anyhow :rofl:) but I figured if I have fresh parts I might as well put them in.

    What do you use for a lubricant/modifier? 90w smells bad enough as it is.:(

    80-90 with either Ford or GM L/S friction modifier added to the mix.
    it's not as important to use in the front diff as it is in the rear
    the front axle is not engaged all the time
    but that choice is yours to make
    I suppose the discs will last longer with the fritcion modifier added
