Snow plow advice.

    I am looking for a plow for my CJ-5, and I found one relatively close for a good price:

    I am curious is it pretty easy to pick up parts and/or fabricate a frame for a purchase like the one above?

    Or should I just wait and find a deal on a complete system and save the hassle?

    I have no problem making a frame, my biggest concern is obtaining controls, and making sure that it is not a manual plow.

    Looks to be a manual angle, I don't see any cylinders on the frame. Says there's a pump with it?? Plow frame and headgear "should" be easy to find, alot of them are taken off, never to be reused. Post up a WTB ad here in the classifieds. I'd check out the pump assy at the least, a 4-way will run you at least his asking price or more. Check the blade for rust and cracks/broken welds. Also, check the measurement between the "ears" of the mount. May be different from brand to brand. In my area a Meyer or Fisher has better resale/parts availability.HTH

    On the manual angle, is it that big of a deal to get out and switch the angle? Thanks for the info, I will take a look at it and see what it looks like. If it does not pan out I will put an add in the classifieds, only problem is that it does not look like to many people live that close to me. Have you ever hear of anyone converting a manual blade to hydraulic control?

    If your driveway is a straight shot, a manual angle is no big deal. But, gettin out and pulling that pin gets to be a real PITA!! To convert a manual all you need to do is weld on the angle cylinder mounts onto the frame and the blade section, mount the cylinder and hoses. I'd look for a used 4-way set up before I tried to convert that one. If you were closer, I know of two manual blades you could have for free. By the time you buy cylinders,hoses, pump, and pay to weld it together you'll have a pile of $$$ into that one.

    Thanks for the input, I am definantly going to look for a 4-way setup.

    On a side note my grandfather has a V-plow that he purchased from the state of MN back in the 60's. He has a Ford 3/4 ton pickup that he had to build a frame for so the plow would fit on the truck. Damn plow was so heavy that he made the frame mount to the front and rear axle. He then modified the suspension of the truck to use coil springs off of a rail car to support the weight. He used it to plow snow off lake Winnebegosh so that the fish houses could be put out there.

    4 way setup is the way to go, ubnless you are plowing a straight line, and can throw the snow the same direction all of the time, like the state to the right of the highway, or in your driveway:rofl: i use to get mad about that, untill i did some plowing

    I might have the hydrulic stuff for the first setup for a jeep with a hurricane. ........

    After doing a little more hunting locally I did come across a blade that came off of a Scout. I do not think it would be that much of a hassle to fab up frame to hook it up. Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like it has 4 way controls.

    Looks like a Meyer 4-way. Try and get the dimension of the upright "headgear" assy with the lights on it. That part sits on top of the frame rails with side plates that bolt to the inside of the frame. You want to make sure it'll fit, depending on what year the Scout was the frame was probably wider. Plow looks at least 7' wide, hope you got good front springs. Them suckers are heavy, and all that mass tends to bend up Jeep parts in a hurry if you're not careful. I like my 6' Meyer most times, although 6.5' would be nice.

    That setup is not electric over hydraulic and is going to require a pump that runs off the motor. I found a Meyer E47 with a 7.5' blade off an F-250 that I cut down and re-welded the supports and the A-frame to fit the CJ mount I had. I also modified the lift frame to mount on the frame rails and work around my PS mount.

    Is it pretty difficult to find a pump? What did you use to cut down your blade (plasma cutter?) and what width did you go with on your blade?

    All shade tree here. I used a sawzall to cut the blade and I cut the supports and blade guide attachments with a torch. The blade is now 6'.

    I cut the A-frame with the torch and re-welded it. As for the pump, I wouldn't think it would be too hard to find. Look around were you're at or search on line. There are probably lots of motor drive pumps around. You can find electric/hydraulic pumps just about everywhere. I got mine from a guy that just didn't want it anymore (one mans junk etc, etc...).
