SSDutch - a 1964 CJ6

Mike I'm wiring my rig right now, it looks from your pics like you ran your rear section wires top side....just curious why, and what is the routing?
I'm just to the point of feeding wire through the firewall so looking at best options.

Well - a couple of reasons.

I had a couple of wires to run down that way anyway - for the underseat water pump and the light I have mounted on the side in the rear.

I liked the idea of having wires up and out of mud/water/snow/sand and away from tree branches etc.

Plus when I looked at running them out and under, there's so much stuff right in that spot -- brakes, clutch linkage, exhaust etc.

I did have to lengthen a couple running them this way - not sure if you will going the other or not.

Got the w/s and hood back on today. Also have all the shoulder sections of seat belts mounted again.

And started on the water tank project. Thanks again to Steve Lane for the freebie water pump.

Any thoughts for an enclosure to mount the pump in? I was going to use an ammo can but there just isn't enough room for it.

 

Looking good Mike....wonder if a tupperware storage type box w/ lid would work for your pump? Try Target/ K Mart? They come in lots of sizes and are/can be weather tight

I can't make a decent box out of plywood - much less sheet metal...

Toolbox is a good idea - with plastic I'd be afraid it'd get brittle and break before long (I want to be able to stuff all the external H20 stuff in a bag of some sort on top of the pump).

Just went to buy some angle iron to make a frame for the tank...and my supplier is getting out of the new steel business. Only other show in town isn't open on Saturday...

 

in that case Mike you might try a heat/ac company....they could bend up a box out of duct material, wouldn't think it would cost much

That's a good idea as well.

I'm gonna go look at the toolbox route just to see if I can get anything close. A hinged/lockable lid might be nice too.

Just remembered - I also need something metal because the power switch also needs a mounting point.

 

Meh - just went and looked for something to use, and it's back to the ammo can idea. Nothing that size made of metal anymore apparently....

 

Well, the ammo box could be made to work, but I've decided not to go this route:





The main issue is it forces me to flip the water tank 90 degrees, which puts all the fittings on the front of the tank vs. the side right by where the pump is.

I think rather than having the enclosure dictate the mounting, I'm going to weld up an angle-iron frame for both the tank and pump. Once it's done, in, and all the hose routing is set I'll get a sheet metal cover bent up for the pump.

 

Got a good start on the tank frame today - out of 3/4" angle.



Hope to get a bit more time tomorrow - I plan to weld some nuts on the outside of the angle that will let some sections of threaded rod both mount the whole deal and clamp down on the tank.

 

Nuts for mounting welded on. Sheet metal welded for pump to mount to. Next up - hoses and connections.
