Can I run with the gear in that condition?

Yep...run to the parts store. On foot. :D

you can run an extension from the vent as high as you want to go....
the race is over for those diff gears...

What ratio is it? I'd look for a complete axle - should be cheaper than replacing the gears.

How much of a job is the diff. gear?
    Are parts easy to get?
Am I going to need lots of other parts/seals,bearings,etc?

Is the ratio 3.73? That is one of the #s on the tag.

Gahh....power of a mod with lack of an undo kills again. I edited your original post rather than replying.

    My apologies!

The only thing you don't need to replace is the differential case. I would plan on all the bearings being trashed. There are numbers on the ring gear that will confirm the ratio. I don't know what the numbers are for the 3.73. It will be a large number then small number. I. E. 43-8 indicates 5.38 ratio. Since the spider gears are bad you might consider a locker, perfect time to install one.

If it's a 3.73, you should be able to find a replacement axle pretty easily.

You can go to Randy's Ring & Pinion and look at the prices, but you'll be way over the cost of another used axle.
    http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetai...Side=Front&DiffID=10&DiffName=Dana+Spicer+D27

Plus, setting up differential gears can be challenging for anyone but a pro. There's a lot to it, and you'll need to buy special tools.

Dana 27 axles are not in great demand today, and even if you don't upgrade to a limited slip or locker, you might want to upgrade to a model 30 from a later CJ. There too, a 3.73 open axle (ie open gears - no limited slip) should be pretty easy to find, and significantly less expensive than fixing this axle.

I guesss i didnt see the other post about this. but if you have bad gears, but have done alot of other work to the rest of the axle (seals, bearings kingpin bearings) I would say repalce the gears and keep the axle. With the front axle since you do not use it much i wouldnt be as scared to setup the gears yourself, it would be good practise to try adn setup your own gears. But if everything on the axle is trash you may find it easier to swap to a differnt axle assembly. Its funny, i hardly see many 3.73 gears for the 27, i see mainly the lower gears for them.

Huh. Yeah, could be, but it seems like there are a lot of members here with V6 CJs with 3.73 axles. Certainly the intermediates with standard 3.73 gears are a lot more common than the optional 4.27s. Either of those would be a good donor.

Would the Dana 30 be an easy swap?
Same hardware for attaching springs and driveshaft?

Good news! the rear Diff looks fine.

Should there be a vent on the rear diff?
    I can't find one.

The left axle tube should have a small hole in it near the middle, probably on the back side, that's the actual vent. Best thing to do is plug that with something like silicone and put a vent in the cover like the front and run a line up.
