What tire brand.....?

OK, I just got done searching for an hour..... I am in need of replacing my tires on the CJ. I would like to buy locally to avoid shipping and all, there are not too many tire places around here. What brand and model tire would you suggest? I know Goodyear and Pro Comp are a known brand, how about Coopers? I see coopers here and do not know about them. I also have thought about going with the tires from Hi Tech retread.

Any suggestions, or what works best for you would be great.

the 31" Cooper MTs are good value, I use 'em on mine
if you don't want highway noise look at their Discoverer series
they are rated M-S, but highway friendly; they are on my wifes XJ

 

I guess that info would help......

I would like an all out trail tire. I drive the CJ to work and back now and then, other than that it is used on my property as a get around/work horse and of course trails. The more aggressive the better, I am not concerned about road noise or hwy manners.

I currently run Mud Kings and if they ever wear out, I'll probably go with Mickey thompson Baja Claws

Seriously, the Mud Kings have been on the Jeep for at least 12 years and there is still nearly 3/4 inch of tread. They are cheap too.

I'm gonna put these on my '56, CO-OP Grip Spurs in 7.50x16. Kinda hard to find, and about $150 each, you'll have to get them at a farmer's CO-OP store that sells tires. I've heard great things about them, SIDSCJ sez he used to have some on his '56 and they were great off-road and in mud. Look pretty aggressive to me, I'm not wanting wide and fat tires for rock crawling, I want tires to run the mountain trails here in Colorado with.

I don't know what other sizes they come in though. I've only found one place I can get them, and it was a phone conversation.

 

I see what you mean, every person has their own thing on tires.

I'll keep an eye out and go with a decent brand at a good price.

good all around tires IMHO BFG MT, Pro Comp MT, Toyo Open Country MT, and the Goodyear MTR to name a few.

 

TheTire tread that Ron, Rondog. Posted is the tire tread that I want. It is a very good-looking tire, and it looks like it will do the job In any off-road situation, and it might have a slight humming sound on the road, which I don't mind at all

If you want all out off road tires I would go with either the swampers TSL bias or the boggers. If you want something that has better street manners the BFGs MTs are a good choice except they are spendy. The pro comp MTs are a good off road tire with decent road manners. The Buckshot radials wouldn't be a bad choice either.

If your looking for cheap.... I have heard a lot of good things about the Hi Tech retreads. The mud kings were also pretty decent. Those Co Op tires look pretty cool too.

I went with the Cooper Discovery SST last year; the local tire guy recommended them over the Mickey’s and Pro Comps. I really think it was because it is the main brand he carries and not because the others are bad tires. I have been happy with them…they handle will on the street and I took my CJ over the Rubicon and had no problems what so ever. I also have had it in the mud while hunting and they handled well there too. I also liked that they were about $30-40 less than the Mickey’s and Pro Comps and a heck of a lot less than Goodyear’s. I do not like the directional tires…what direction do I put my spare?

I just had these installed on my Jeep today. I love the skinny look of the tire.

 

I have had these on my jeep for about 15 years now, they actually have around 11-12k miles on them, they have worked pretty well over the years, several trips to Tellico and countless miles in the mud around here. They still have decent tread on them but because of age are starting to crack in spots. They are Widetrack radial Baja MT's in 31x10.5

 

OK, I think I will go this route. The local dealer is known for great service, will prorate tires for replacement. I called and there is no charge for install.... He wants 168 per tire for 33's. I need five.... So yeah a little more than the Hi-techs..... But I do like the idea of a new tire and a store to go to for help.
Thanks for the info. Also I see you are running 3" lift. Do you have any rubbing? On my CJ I have roughly a 2.5" lift at the moment, I am looking to replace shackles and go with 1/2 lift on those giving me 3". I believe I should not have any real issues with 33's.

sounds like a good choice. I FWIW I run 33" swampers, which are a really big 33 with 2.5 inches of lift on black jeep with no issues. I have a little rubbing here and there, but I don't think those spots would be rub free with more lift.

I wouldn't just discard the mail order idea, I get mine from national tire & wheel. Price a round between them Tyres int. and 4 wheel parts. I've gotten mine fom them for less even with shipping, (No tax usually) then locally. Then I had them mounted and bal. locally for $8.50 each. The Super Swampers are really worth it!

 

I have not had any issues with them rubbing or anything else like that. They are all around good tires.

OK, I ended up getting some Cooper STT's 33's.

I got some "blems" for 140 per tire installed. The blem parts were in the lettering on the sidewall. I am very happy with them! I just went for a short stroll on my property in 2wd, on a steep loose hill I was able to walk right up in 2wd! I am going to try and get out some tomorrow and see what a difference things are.
