Timing chain recomendations

I need to replace my timing chain/gears. Anyone have a brand that has worked well for them? Edelbrock runs $48 from Summit with Cloyes running around $108. They talk like the two are the same thing. What is with the $ diff?

 

I would go with the Edelbrock. From experience I have had them in engines with well over 500HP.

 

X2 on what Sparky said. I had an Edelbrock go sloppy in about 30,000 miles on my EVEN fire 231. Replaced it with a stock steel replacement from Cloyes (about $25-$30 at the time) unit and have had no problems in about 9-10 or so years of running it. The Edelbrock was so sloppy I couldn't set ignition timing. Nickmil

Nickmil, just curious about your experience. I have never had any issues with Edlebrock chains. Of course my disclaimer will be that my experience is with building up Ford V-8's when using the Edelbrocks.

I have rebuilt a couple of 231 OF's but always with stock parts. Was the Cloyes you used on yours of the stock type? Again, just curious. Thanks!

The Cloyes I used was a stock type with steel gears. It also did away with the tensioners. I've had good luck with it up to this point and I run my stuff very hard. That was the first time I used an Edelbrock timing set and was less than impressed, especially considering the quality of the rest of their product line. I've used Cloyes double roller timing sets for years with all the performance engines I've built over the years and never had a problem with them. I'm running a gear drive in the race Jeep now though!:twisted: Nickmil

 

Thanks for the response. I was just a bit surprised to hear of your experience with the Edelbrock (sounds like you were too). Cloyes does make quality stuff and I've never had problems with their stuff either.

Didn't remember talking about a specific kind. Sounds to me that stock will work fine. I started it up last night and felt around on the distributor and it was vibrating quite a bit. I think that is the prob for sure. What brand of distibutor did you say was in yours Sparky? I am craving the smoothness of that engine.
