I talked with an all-knowing co-worker of mine (guess who Sparky ;) ), and he thought it sounded like a vacuum leak. Suggested intake manifold, making sure carb hoses are tight, carb gasket, etc.

Not my opinion, just that of my all-knowing co-worker.

Makes no difference. I didn't have it hooked up with the points distributor. It's set up to hook up to the HEI so I never bothered to hook it up to the 12V coil.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

Pulled the heads off after inspecting the plugs more closely. The passenger side plugs showed bits of something on the insulator and the electrodes weren't tan, heck the insulator wasn't really tan either.

Driver's side head looks good, nice and carbony. The passenger side looks as if it's been burning antifreeze for a while. The fact that the passenger side produced light white smoke was a clue that I'd forgotten until Lex pointed it out to me the other day.

Head gasket had a hole in it where there shouldn't have been one. Perhaps that's a clue? Even if this isn't the what caused the problem, looks like I needed to pull the head off anyway.

So tomorrow they're going into the machine shop for freshening up and some hardened valve seats.

that hole is at a dead end coolant passage
no concern unless it's not sealing around the perimeter

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

Either it wasn't sealing around the perimeter or I have a cracked head then. :(

It was blowing white smoke like I said.

The right bank is notabley different in appearance than the left like I said above. So, what is it then if that's not it?

Why do I get the feeling I'm just plain screwed now? :(

I guess you're saying no obvious signs of leaking?

Sparky clean that antifreeze out immediatley. Antifreeze will eat and damage the babbit that is in main and cam bearings.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

Not that I can find anywhere. Just that the right bank looks far different than the left. Something is different on that side. What is it? I don't know what to "fix" here...

Just white smoke from that side and whiffs of antifreeze after driving it. I always thought the odor was just from not having an overflow tank. Then when Mcruff suggested he'd had a blown head gasket, I thought with the white smoke and the fact that the right side exhaust will suck your hand up agains the tailpipe it was worth looking into. I've got nothing else to go on. I feel like I'm at the end of my rope.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

got any pics of the intake gaskets that came off ?
were they the factory metal type ? (what I prefer)
any obvious signs the intake had been off ?
I would say the one head hadn't if the gasket was eaten away like that

I'll take some pics later. But yes, they were factory metal on the intake as well. So trying to decipher your last phrase, that head's bad is what you would think?

No obvious signs intake's been off that I can tell.

Re: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

I like the metal intake gaskets but the stock head gaskets on these motors leave alot to be desired. Mine was eroded away right in the middle between both cylinders on the passenger bank. The block was fine but the gaskets were toast.
