Amc 20 Trac Lok

    I found an amc 20 nt axle for sale and it has a trac lok in it. Are these any good? Thinking about it for the cj7.

    Don't know about the trac lok but I don't hate an AMC 20 diff like some do.

    Yes, the splined end for the hub isn't ideal, but unless you're planning some hard wheeling, you probably won't have an issue. Aftermarket forged axles are available and not terribly expensive. My understanding is the ring gear is larger than a Dana 44 and the center section is pretty stoutly constructed. I ran one pretty hard in my youth when I had an AMX.

    What is in your CJ7 now? I wouldn't swap out a D44 for an AMC 20. Even if the 44 is open, the amc trac lok is almost an open diff.....I had one in my CJ7 - it did nothing to help with traction - they are about as mild an LSD as you can get. Even the D44 trac loc is pretty much the same - very weak. Better off with an open case so you can install what you want more easily.

    I have an amc 20 wide track that is welded and hate it. I was going to do one piece shafts on mine and swap in the track lok, but if it’s no good, I’ll save up for a selectable.

    Sounds like you'd be picking up the NT 20 mostly to use the trac-lok in place of the welded center on the WT? Price is everything....like free kind of price? If you hate the welded gears, then the trac lok will drive like an open diff and be very street friendly. But it certainly won't add the kind of traction a typical LSD (like a powr loc) does. If you are looking for traction, then your existing plan to upgrade axles and find the traction device you want sounds better. I am sure there is discussion to be had about how much money you really want to put into a 20, but that may be a different discussion than this.

    The other axle is $300, but I'd rather put that towards something better, like a selectable. The welded rear works, but it makes it hard to steer tight. The AMC 20 isn't a bad axle once the one piece shafts are installed. Am mentioned before, the ring gear is bigger than a 44.

    Way over priced. Around here you can't buy a D30 and get out of the drive before the seller is throwing in the 20 for you to dumpster.

    We currently have 2 AMC 20s in the shop that we don’t know what to do with. The owners insist on keeping them, but the bearing races spun inside the tubes so badly that they gouged huge ruts inside and wallowed the openings. The tubes are so thin that they flex and put undue stress on the bearings. I used to think 20s got undue criticism, but now I wouldn’t use one for a paperweight.

    IMO.....
    Dumping the big $$$ for a selectable locker in an AMC 20 is hanging a new chandelier in a haunted house.
    There are way better options out there to install a $1,000 differential into.

    I was just thinking today, I have a scout 44 rear axle and I have 2 sets of 4.56 gears for D44s. Rather than buying axle shafts and new gears for the AMC 20, I'll just build my 44s and this way, they will be sitting on the shelf ready to to drop in the CJ. I forgot I had two sets of 4.56 gears... :D Apparently this jeep wants to be built out of other people's junk and whatever is laying around.

    Two quick things......
    First the AMC 20. IMHO for most purposes, they are fine. A set of one piece axles removes the most common failure. For heavier wheeling, welding and trussing can be very effective. I say all of this because for most folks, any kind of swap and the cost entailed probably isn't justified, barring a screaming deal on a 44.

    I am a heated hater of the trac lok. They have a bad habit of failure, not just in the traction department, but physically as well. Innards have a bad habit of falling out into the housing, usually resulting in ingestion by the R&P.
