Fire Extinguisher?

This is my second post. Forgive me if this is not the correct spot, I did not see a general forum. But that could be the low coffee levels this morning.

Any opinions on a decent fire extinguisher and mounts for in the jeep? Thinking of trying to just mount one on the bar behind the seat.

I don’t even have the CJ5 yet and already been ordering parts.

Just think, fire, I need it quick and the thing on fire is probably where the extinguisher is..

Get one with an official "A:B:C" rated capacity. The bigger the better. "Dry Chemical" type is a good all-round choice - although it leaves a powdery mess the C02 and other gaseous types do not have any residual action. Maybe you'd want to think about having both types on board...

Be aware that once a vehicle fire gets a start, any portable extinguisher will have very limited effect. (Call 911 ASAP!) But in the first moments they can be extremely valuable.

I know that the popular place is to mount it on the roll bar behind the driver's seat. I think that may be for show as much as anything. I mounted mine on the floor in front of the passenger seat where I can reach if I am stuck in the driver's seat. If I am trapped there because of a collision or rollover I want to be able to reach the extinguisher. Maybe a second one mounted in the typical roll bar position would be a good idea but I don't want to burn alive knowing there is an extinguisher 6" behind me that I can't reach.

Similar to finding your buddy buried in an avalanche or having someone with no pulse in the backcountry (maybe the same incident), calling 911 is an entirely useless endeavor. You need to plan to save your own behind-quickly. I installed extinguishers of both sides of my 3B roll bar and just made the brackets. http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/106011/page-12

As a Firefighter, I tend to agree. Usually by the time we can reach the scene, the tires are burning off the rims. Look along the Interstate as you drive, and count all the scorched patches on the breakdown lane...

An on-board portable extinguisher may possibly save the day, if you apply it early. But don't expect it to stop any car fire bigger than a bucket. I'd call 911 regardless.

We were here on Sunday - only about two miles from the station... (We saved the ten cords of firewood logs.)

Mine is rollbar mounted. I can reach it with my right hand while seated.

I've got a foam based extinguisher mounted via velcro to the passenger seat frame. Easy access and it wont ruin the jeep if I have to spray it somewhere. It's called "Fireade"

I had a really small halon extinguisher. It saved my jeep twice from under dash shorts.

I really need to be better about taping off electrical connections.

    I went with Two
    • UL rated 1-A,10-B:C
    • U.S.C.G, DOT approved

Kiddie Extinguishers Mounted on QR brackets I made on either Roll bar up right. This way either the driver or the passenger can easily reach across pull the red release knob and the bottle just lifts off the mount. As I will soon have a Full Hard top I wanted something that could be accessed from inside the rig as well as from outside (granted the door has to be open)

The top is a structured insulated thing I have been building the last couple winters. I hope to have it painted this 4th of July weekend. I could post a bunch of photos but it would be much faster to direct you to my Project thread on the CJ-2A page the stuff about the top starts on page 122 of the Thread "A little project update on Chug A Lug" in the Project thread section of the forum

    https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/a-little-project-update-on-chug-a-lug_topic33676_page122.html

You will have to wade through a bunch of stuff about stuff other then the Hard top as I work on the top in the winter. So theres other stuff in the middle.

One thing many people don't tend to do is educate themselves on fire extinguisher use. 1. Check whatever fire extinguisher retaining system to be sure you know how it works-think PANIC, 2. Check fire extinguishers periodically to ensure they are still functional-pressure gauge-(last inspection date) 3. Make sure you know how the fire extinguisher works, including the safety/charging system (if present) works. 4. ALWAYS check the fire extinguisher for proper function BEFORE attacking the fire. 5. Fire extinguishers usually work best if sprayed at the base of the fire. 6. Advise any passengers of location(s) of fire extinguishers when off roading. 7. READ THE DISTRUCTIONS! Good luck!
